En route from Belfast to Rosslare for the ferry to Roscoff, the 12 started to play-up and would not idle below 3500 revs but was pulling strongly on the open road, tho' drinking heavily as I discovered.
Put it on the ferry and an hour before docking rang BMW assist who were helpful and said I would be picked up by recovery truck and if the techie could not fix it we, had pillion, would be conveyed to BMW dealer in Brest.
Spent the next 7 hours in the dealer's and managed to break off a good front tooth biting into a bagette, needless to say I was overjoyed at this all happening on the first day of my hols
I kept looking round the workshop door for signs of progress but was greeted by gallic shrugs. Eventually they said it the problem was bad essence, it was filled at Tesco prior to leaving, off came the tank and the small amount of fuel remaining was ditched. Fresh essence was added, all replaced and guess what....fault still there of course.
This was a main dealer and supposedly had all the test gear. I was rung from time to time by BMW assist who were keen to give me a car. After 61/2 hours they changed the small component on the outside of the left throttle body, this is I believe the TPS but don't quote me, BINGO fault cleared.
Bike is 18 months old, 15000 miles, obviously under warranty and must have shown as such on their computer.
I was then presented with a bill for 656.72 euros. My French is not good but I did try to protest saying I thought this should be free as under warranty etc. They were adamant the bill must be paid, I paid as I was uncertain how the system operated.
I have of course informed BMW Assist who are investigating and will come back to me.
With the wisdom of hindsight I think the techi was incompetent and used the fuel issue to charge for the time. Hurst's in Belfast tell me this should have been solved in minutes from hooking up to the test equipment.
We spent the night in Brest, a nice enough place, but we should have been 200+ miles south.
Do you think I am due a little something for the hassle of it all?
Noticed while strapping it down on the return journey that it has an oil weep around final drive oil seal.
This bike came out of Hurst's the day before departure having had a new clutch fitted due to the famous oil seal leak from engine.I do not think this had any bearing on the TPS fault and attach no fault to Hursts.
It occurs to me I only have the EWS and fuel controller faults to collect and I have a full house at a very low mileage indeed
Anyone else had the TPS fault?
