Problem when using 2 player on xbox 360

Another numpty question from me...
When using fifa 09 on xbox 360 on single player - no problem, game plays normally.
However, when using 2 player- the game loads as it should until the 2 player game starts. Player one can play as normal but as soon as player 2 touches any of the buttons on player 2 controller the game freezes and nothing happens.

Its not the controller - does the same with an old controller and a brand new one.
Its not the game - freezes on an older disc and also on a brand new disc.

Any idea

Yes - I think so anyway
I've had a google and apparently the issue lies with the unit itself and it looks like the only option is to delete all fifa 09 profiles - my son is fuming about this as he's currently lying in 3rd position in the premier league

Anyone know of any other option to cure this
