Can anyone help me as i seem to have an annoying issue with Excell.
If I open a spreadsheet and then try to do a Save As to another location or to keep an amended copy the sheet closes automatically. Save works fine. I am sure this never happened before but others that i have asked cannot make sense of the situation. Its an annoying problem rather than a major issue as it means that I then have to reopen to continue working. Running XP with Excell 2003.

The first is the bleedin' obvious so apologies: I assume when you Save as, it is not after initiating closure of the sheet!

Second - are there any macros in the workbook? In particular, is there a Workbook_BeforeSave event (it would be in the ThisWorkbook module)?

Aaahh the "bleeding obvious" is never obvious unless you know what you are looking for, so no offence taken. Its anytime in any sheet and there are no macro's but of course there are calculations or formulas, simple stuff like total of cells and rate calculations mainly. Its on sheets that have been sent to me or created by me. Getting frustrated with this, tried the "Help" but no help!

Another obvious one that does not solve the problem but helps all the same is simply to go to the file with my computer and copy the file elsewhere, then rename it...

Just an idea that might suffice, tried it on mine with XL2002 but it works fine...

excel help

This may not be much help, but I seem to recall somebody asking a similar question in one of the help sections of PC PRO a while back, I cant find the issue but a look on their web site in the real world computing section may be of use. I seem to recall is was known problem and they directed the writer of the letter to an article in the Microsoft knowledge base.
Sorry its not much but it may point you in the right direction.

Just to eliminate any possiblity of it being something to do with the files (for whatever bizarre reason), if you send the files to someone else or use them on another computer, do they have a problem?

This MS Security update caused various problems with Office software

Are you running any add-ins? I have seen them cause problems. If so, try switching them all off and see if that helps. If it does, add them back one by one until the problem reoccurs. You would then know which is the offending article.

The other one is a corrupt toolbar which is strangely common but this usually causes Excel to crash. As a last resort, close Excel. Find any .xlb files, rename to .old and reopen Excel and see what happens.

More background required

1. What extension does the filename have before you open it (.xls/.csv/etc)?

2. What extionsion does the filename have when you use the SaveAs option (check using Windows explorer)

3. Are you saving to a local drive or a remote drive? If remote, what sort of connection do you have (ethernet, WLAN, mobile, etc)?

4. Is the workbook a shared workspace? Check using Tools/Shared Workspace in excel

thanks...

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, just been told by our wonderful French IT people that we will be upgrading our 2003 Office software to 2007 this month so I shall wait and see if this makes a difference before doing more. But greatly appreciate all your suggestions.

That will be a whole new pile of fun when you send your 2007 versions of Excel around to non-2007 users, oh that one gets me a few calls a week :D

Miccrosoft sure know how to drive the upgrade path, especially as they've fooked up with the Windaz
