Three days ago I logged on through MSN to read my emails. Usual email address and password, only for a message to appear in red saying I'd made a mistake with one or both. I tried again and again but cannot get to see my emails. My wife contacted MSN using her hotmail address to report the problem but a robot replied requesting me to, you've guessed it, check the spelling of my email address and password.

What's the next step? Adopt a new email address and password just because MSN or Hotmail have made a mistake? It seems Hotmail is currently being replaced with New Hotmail. Maybe that's the problem?

Well forgive me if I'm (teaching how to suck eggs). Did you have cap locks on or any function key for different characters on a lap top etc so that yr email user name or password are not what you think you are typing? Did you change yr password recently and forgot? These are common reasons for a log in failure and even very experienced users can make them. DAMHIK.

It's not usually their fault.
Try later in case there is some strange fault with the system.
Go on to MSN site and click on forgotten password function etc.

HTH Take care

Paul

1. The Caps Lock is definitely not on.

2. I don't know what you mean by the function key but the email address is identical to the one I've been using for four/five years.

3. My password is the same one I've been using for ten/twelve years.

4. I have tried five or six times a day for the last three days with no success.

5. I haven't 'forgotten' my password. It's the same one I've always had.

:nenau

My missus says that I should just adopt a different email address and password but I'd like my old ones back. Could it be that New Hotmail hasn't settled down yet. I got onto their website to click on 'Update' but it seems that's also down.

But if you go through the 'forgotten my password' it will issue a new one which when you're back in you can change back to the one you know that you haven't forgotten :blast

Not keen on Hotmail or msn too many add's and pop-ups -- have a look at changing to GMX

Might be a thick question but if you've forgotten your password, how can you log on to retrieve their message? :nenau

This morning I tried re-registering with MSN/Hotmail but the system doesn't appear to like my email address which has served me well for a number of years.

I get this message (in red)-

The portion of your e-mail address that follows the @ symbol is part of a "reserved domain" such as live.com, hotmail.com, msn.com or passport.com. Please type a different e-mail address.

I don't get it. My email address ends in hotmail.co.uk but it seems to suggest I should choose another email address which also doesn't end in hotmail.com either.

Also if I go with the 'Forgotten password' route, MSN/Hotmail with email me with a message which I won't be able to read as I can't get into it, can I? I suppose I can ask them to reply to my wife's email address. Jeez, why oh why does everything have to be so friggin complicated?

That's why you always need 2 email addresses... Can you edit your profile to specify a new email address? Probably not.

Because in the process of any half decent supplier they will take you via an authentication process whereby they don't need to email you anything. But the caveat here is I said half decent and Microshite and snotmail might not cut it there.

Have you thought about trying via an alternative client like Mail2web ?

Not sure if you can but might be worth a try ?

have you chnged yr firewall or virus checker? This sounds to me to be like yr computer is filtering out yr email for some reason?

It's not actually filtering out my emails, I simply cannot get to my emails anymore. It keeps telling me that it doesn't recognise my email address and/or my password, which I've been using for years.

I may well have given them a second email address some years ago but for the life of me I cannot remember it.

Through my wife's email address, they sent me a fifteen question 'robotic' email. I'm now not even sure of my 'secret question'.

I could of course register with another email address and password, then notify everybody of a change but that seems a lot of hassle. At least I'd be able to send/receive emails once more.

It seems a shame I cannot simply phone a human being up and get it sorted.

Ah, this morning I received an email from MCN/Hotmail and they've now restored my old email address and password. However when checking my incoming emails I've discovered that during the time my emails were 'down', someone using my details has been offering an Eldis Motorhome on ebay, and there are lots and lots of messages to and from various prospective buyers.

It seems the motorhome is in mint condition and yet he only wanted a few thousand for it. He also declined to supply a contact phone number and/or address where the motorhome could be collected from. He seems to have been stringing six or seven potential buyers along.

Ebay have now contacted me and my account has been frozen. In the meantime I will have to change my email address, ebay I/D and password. Just thought you might be interested.:(
