My wireless connection is on an Orange Livebox.

It's not encrypted (yes I know :o) and I can connect to it no problem.

My daughter can't though - her computer 'sees' it but when you tell it to connect a dialog box appears saying it's trying to connect and then fails.

The weird thing is her computer can 'see' a neigbours network (not encrypted either) and can connect to that with no problems :nenau

Any idea what may be happening - she's on XP and I'm on Vista if that makes a difference.

Cheers

Have her check her firewall settings....or simply turn it off, connect and see if that works (then you'll have established what the problem is anyway)

Andre, I assume that you have first entered the 24 digit wep number which you will find on the base of the live box, if you haven't done so you do need to.
If having done so you still can't connect you may need to set the Live box to 'Discoverable or Connect' mode which is pretty simple. On one of the sides of the Live Box near the bottom edge you will see 2 buttons '1' & '2' press button No.1 for 2 or 3 seconds and that will switch the box to discoverable for about a minute or so I think. So enter the wep on the laptop first then press button '1' and then press 'connect' on the laptop.

Thanks guys :)

I'll look at the firewall settings and take it from there.

Dickieboy, when you talk about entering the 'wep' number do you mean enter it in conjunction with the Orange set up disc?
I have to admit that I have not set up my daughters computer using this but assumed that as the signal is not encrypted I wouldn't have to :nenau

It just seems weird that her computer can see two unsecured signals, mine and the neighbours, and can connect only to the neighbours one (with no set up required). Or is this a feature of Liveboxes only, that you have to set up a computer to work with them whether they are secure or not or............more likely........am I being a complete numpty here :o

Andre I was assuming that you have the Live box installed on your Home PC and that you want to connect your daughters PC/Laptop wirelessly.

If that is the case there is no need to load any of the Orange software on your daughters PC/laptop. The only time you need the software is for a wired connection and/or on the initial setup.

So if you have the Live box set up on your own PC (cable connection or wireless) all you should need to do to connect your daughters PC/Laptop wirelessly is switch it on and either search for the Live box network or wait for the PC/Laptop to find it automatically.

When you then try to connect you will prompted to enter the 24 digit wep key, sometimes you have to enter it twice.

Most other wireless routers would then let you connect but for some reason the Live box sometimes will not let you connect and this is when you have to press button '1' .

I find that it is easier to first enter the wep number on the PC/Laptop the corresponding number of times, then press button '1' on the Live box and then press the connect button on the PC/Laptop.

If you wanted to connect your daughters PC/Laptop via the cable then you would have to install the orange software and your account details password etc.

I don't know if the network is encrypted but you certainly have to enter a wep key and either you or whoever set it up on your PC must have done so for it to be working on your PC:thumb2

Thank you for taking the time to explain all that - I'll give that a go this evening, something to look forward to :mmmm
