Round 'n' round in circles.........
OK, I am doing a four day ride around the Scottish Highlands in a few weeks time and my current map set only extends as far North as Carlisle.
So last night I set about loading all of Scotland on my 128mb card and removing a lot of the Southern maps in order to get all the data required on the card.

Selected the required maps using the Selection Tool and clicked on Send to Device, the data card had already been fitted in the USB Card Programmer and no other devices are plugged in to any USB ports.

The pop-up screen appears and the correct and the correct device has been automatically selected, so click send to.

It then starts its routine of collecting the map set, a total of 32 maps, the pecentage bar slowly progresses across to 100%.
Then it starts building the map set up, again the percentage bar slowly progressing across the 100%.
So far so good, and it has taken about 15 minutes......then it sets about deleting the old map set, the percentage bar starts then gets to 10% and stops. It then hangs there?

I left it 20 minutes and it was still hung and refused to move, although the timer was still counting upwards??

Aborted and tried again, all went ok until the last process of deleting the old map set, same again, got to 10% then froze.

Tried it a third time and it then went to 50% and froze?

Gave up, closed down PC and went to bed!!

I tried it again first thing this morning, this time I thought that I had cracked it as the bugger decided to tease me. All loading ok, then when it came to the deleting part, it went to 92%...... then froze.......doh!

Then I had an idea, erase the data on the card first using the Tools menu, clicked on erase and it then flashed 'mapset deleted' in a split second??

So any thoughts as to why it is freezing when it gets to the last part of the process when loading a new map set, more importantly what can I do next??

Thanks

Al, no idea why this is happening but if I was having those problems I would reinstall the base Mapsource software and then install the latest upgrade (v6.03?). At least this would rule out a possibility of any file corruption in Mapsource.

If the problem persists then it maybe a hardware problem.

Buy "paper" maps :hapybnce:

Agree with his Lordship's comments.

Ned

I was quite happy using papermaps untill you convinced me to get the SPIII?

Jokin' aside, do you think that it would be an idea to uninstall the Mapsource program and reload it?
It would just mean that I would then have to download the latest version (v6.3) again from the Garmin site

Al, yep, do a reload, at least then you know you are starting with a clean version...you may have incurred corruption of a Mapsource file in some way. This would be the first step in a process of elimination in an effort to find what is causing your problem.

Before you do that though, try simply unplugging the Card programmer and sticking it in another USB slot......I had a problem getting mine to be even seen after a reload the other week and it was only when I changed slots that it pinged up and appeared to mapsource.

Well, trying the option with the least hassle first I swopped the lead over to another USB ports and guess what?

It worked first time..................

Thanks Fanum, top tip??

Lord Snooty,

Thanks also, even if UR an ex GS owner and now a :ymca rider.

Ya welcome BTBR.

Windows.....still plug in and play around   :D

PS I can also recommend getting a four or six point USB2 hub...I've got two USB ports on my machine but they're both 'round the back...So I use a belkin 4 point hub which sits nicely in front of the machine and makes swapping USB kit around nice and easy :D

Uh, be careful with those USB hubs - not all hubs get along well with all computers. I have a little 4 port hub that worked great in my old computer (IBM ThinkPad 240) but my new computer doesn't recognize stuff that is connected to it, even though it recognizes the hub itself.

For someone like BigTrailBikeRider, who is already having enough trouble keeping his head above water with the Windows operating system, introducing a hub just tosses in another variable that can cause problems.

If anyone is having difficulty loading mapsets to a GPSR, either using a USB data card loader (for Garmin proprietary chips) or a USB cable (for the newer GPSRs with USB connections on them), the first step of troubleshooting should be to remove every other USB device, reboot the computer, then see if the computer recognizes the data card loader or GPSR, as the case may be.
