problems with canbus power on/off?

i am having problems powering my zumo 220 from the headstock outlet and need to tap the collective genius we have here, so.....

the 220 lead is fitted with the bmw fitting as described in the "make a lead" thread, and works fine however now and again it says external power is lost and the unit will switch off. now i know the gps unit is ok as it works fine when connected straight to the battery, so does anyone know why this happens when wired into the headstock? and is there an easy solution (apart from just wiring to the battery!!) to this problem

which would be fine, however i would like to use the headstock outlet, so the question was if anyone knew why the power was going on and off.

It's a known problem, mine does the same, apparently it was resolved with a firmware update so you need to call your local BMW dealer.

I had my Starcom wired into the back of the rear accessory socket via a fuse board. This resulted in the front socket not switching off so my sat nav was always on.

I wired the Starcom direct to the battery via an inline fuse, reset the electrics and now the problem has cured itself. I think your Canbus thinks something is drawing power so is remaining switched on?

Did you have any joy with the firmware update? I have intermittent problems with a Garmin Zumo 550 wired into the power outlet on the headstock of a R1200GS. It can be perfectly OK for an hour, after a brief stop it powers up and down. I have checked the bracket and the wiring with a multimeter and there appears to be no problem with that.

well, long story but having got no joy out of my local AD with regards to the firmware, i decided to wire into switched power lead under the seat, all went well, checking each connection as i went to make sure i was getting power, plugged the 220 in and the same thing, the trouble was in the garmin lead!!!! which was new. so... long story short (ish) i have now wired back into the headstock and have powered on/off numerous times and it is working fine!!

OK thanks. I made up the power lead myself by connecting the power lead supplied with the Garmin 550 to the BMW connector and it had been fine but may have deteriorated in some way. I will remove it all and fully test it! Largely because a ready made up one from Touratech is £50.

interesting one this.
My sockets stopped working over a year ago and since I was looking to power a number of gadgets, I just bought a Nippy Normans fuse box with fuse and run all the gadgets off that no problem.
maybe one day I'll look into the canbus power sockets, but for now I'll just ride......

I have my TTR2 GPS powered from the lead beneath the headlight too and it started charging intermittently on holiday in the Alps last year and has now stopped charging completely.

The GPS charges fine in the car and the sparky at work who made up the power lead has checked it with a multimeter and it's fine, so it's either the cradle on the bike or a problem with the CANBUS

Gonna take the bike to work one day so he can check which it is. The power socket beneath the seat works perfectly as I have my Autocom plugged into it.
