A few months ago, against my better judgement, I bought a very abused R100R. 14900 miles from new, ridden for a winter, left uncleaned and unloved, without a battery or turning a wheel for twelve years. Having done bikes up in my youth, I was fully aware that it's cheaper to just go and buy the bike you want, rather than attempting to restore one...................however, as I said...........against my better judgement, I bought it. Today, it went for it's MOT. It passed first time, runs like a dream, but now needs to be cleaned, polished, painted, maybe further modified (clocks/headlamp, rear subframe, rear mudguard, nuts bolts etc.........). Please don't laugh too loudly, as it was a labour of love...........

Keihan full 2into2 stainless system, factory GS rear shock (I had lying around), factory GS complete front end, probably all of the cables, electrics thankfully worked fine, full service and tune up, new tyres, bars, adjusted centrestand, new sidestand, battery box, loads of little bits....................

GS factory parts were 99% bolt on. Clutch is pretty stiff, even with a new cable. I'm sure it's the routing, but it's the best I can do, as the horrible clock surround gets in the way of the cable. HH pads, original shoes. Tank was a replacement, which is why it's the colour it is. Seat may end up solo. Don't like the rear grab rail, but if I take it off, I have to find a new place for the indicators. Fronts will also be mounted as per the GS, whilst doing away with the naff silver painted side bits. those awful pannier rails will also be going

Havn't posted on here for a while but couldn't resist as I've just brought a 1992 R100R to modify too. mines also 1992 and (was) purple. Really pleased with the bike so far. Maybe its my imagination but it feels a lot smoother (but a tad slower) than earlier airheads I have owned. brakes are pretty good too.
Mines having a a gspd look to it. so I suppose I'll have to call it an R100gspdrbitza.
Can't load a photo but so far the bike was already twin plugged with a deep sump conversion plus in the last few months I've fitted
A GSPD tank
unrated alternator
PIA driving lamps
wide dirt bike style handle bars
K series top box
and currently sporting a not very fetching satin black respray.

Next on the list and awaiting modifing/painting/fitting is
remove the horrible instrument panel and fit a
GSPD mini fairing and 'roo' bar modified to fit twin headlamps.
exhaust Y piece and supertrap silencer.
Building a mp3 player/amp/speakers into the top box (its a long story)

Once that lot is done and bank balance willing I'd like to give the engine a little more ummmpppph next year..
couple of question . Is the black thing on the frame down pipes a standard fit oil cooler (mine hasn't got one.
and How much did the GS shock change ride hieght?

Hi,

The ride height change is about 2 inches. If you fit the GS rear shock, you'll have to do something with the front end, and centre and side stands. Interestingly, your smoother, slower comments match my experience. The black thing is the oil cooler.

I'd be interested to see the pics of your bike, and see how it progresses

my rear shock is I think on its way out so its a shame about the GS shock as I can lay my hands on one but a 2 inch lift is to much for me.

As stock the R100r only makes 60bhp compared to some earlier airheads that made 70. Mind you this leaves the way clear for lots of tuning options .

Pardon my curiosity . . but is the steering head angle the same on the R100R and R100GS frames ?

I was wondering if fitting the GS 'leading axle' forks and 21" front wheel altered the steering geometry at all.

I find my 100GS - with 17" rear and 21" front to be very slow steering and tends to run wide on tight corners. I was wondering if your conversion was the same, better or worse ?

Hi Bob,

From everything I managed to read, I understand that the frame geometry is the same. I'm going off other people's opinion, not BMW's. The bike feels just like a GS, same old, same old. Engine wise, it feels smooth, but slower, so I don't know if there are any differences there, but it definitely feels so. Most of the frame/subframe differences seem to be in the little brackets for the side panels, indicators, mudguards etc.

ride height -

dunno if it helps any but...
My late model R100gs (newer switchgear) had an R100r rear shock fitted by previous owner as she was on tiptoe with the standard.

am led to believe the ride height is lower / but have never noted any problems - handles very well actually

no visible differences to speak of when parked beside a standard bike

its very suitable for Irish conditions

I am looking to twin-exhaust a Mystic and I am interested in what you did. I am thinking of using a set of mufflers from a R100, R80 or R100/7, and would appreciate your views.
