Project Supermoto - Outtomunch comes out of retirement

What's the class structure, Andres? Could one {Ahem...:mmmm) campaign a GS...?

Then my fav bit of the track, a longish flat out straight followed by the steep, off camber left hander and, 20m on, the finish line. The hairpin is very slippery I can feel the back step out as I nail it up the gradient to the finish

All the riders that have gone ahead stand by the hairpain so there's always a good audience and the riders try to put on a good show. Once all the riders are 'up' the hill a whistle calls us all back down for the next practice run before lunch.

Once at the bottom Team Banana exchange notes and develop stratagies for the next assault on the hill. With the first run having been a bit of a 'look see' serious heads are donned for the second run.

I decide to try 3rd gear for the first l/h bend and to try improve my lines on the two hairpins. Just getting through the esses will do for me as that's just one thing too many to have to deal with.

Nick (on the Berg) sets off a couple of bikes ahead of me and is flying up towards 'The Gate', open exhaust echoing into the valley below when all of a sudden it goes quiet :(

hillclimb118.jpg

He's obviously come off and it seems like an eternity before the tannoy anounces that he's ok and has remounted and ridden to the finish :) He later explained that the front washed out as he transitioned from the dry open track onto the damp wooded section and he ended up, unhurt, the other side of a large bush :aidan

Right, me next, and feeling somewhat nervous after Nick's little escapade :o

Hit the first l/h bend and completly forgot to shift up into 3rd, bollox :(, but the rest of the run went really well. My line was much improved on the first hairpin, I went flying up the straight and, full of confidence, launched myself into the final l/h hairpin

NHCA_DSC_2921.jpg

a nano second after that piccie was taken I wacked open the throttle and put all my weight over the front to stop it wheelying up the gradient to the finish. This worked, it didn't wheelie :thumb2 however, the back came right around and I ended up on my arse facing down the hill :mmmm

Picked myself up, gave a curtsey to the assembled audience (what a place to come off, in front of all the riders ) and with the help of the marshals pushed my bike off the track........

Yes indeedy :thumb2

I intend using the GS at Curborough next year :bounce1

There is an 'open' class and 'road legal' class that the GS can go into - all sorts of bikes are 'hill climbed', not just SM's and you can take advantage of the 'give it a go scheme' which is a very cheap way to see if you like it.

Check out the NHCA web site for details :thumb2

So, on with Lunch and Nick and I compare scuffs on our leathers (mine is much bigger but his is muddier :D) and I am determined to get that first l/h bend nailed in 3rd gear.................

Off we go again, and the first of our two timed runs.

I'm waiting on the start concentrating like mad on how I'm going to take 'that' bend

hillclimb147.jpg

and off I fly............3rd gear, 3rd gear, 3rd gear echoing in my head as I approach the bend

hillclimb149.jpg

hit the bend, snick up into 3rd :thumb2 and mid corner the bike surgees forward (well, as much as a DRZ can surge )

hillclimb150.jpg

and I can feel the back start to step out, nice and controlled loike, so I just keep the power on waiting for it to hook up..........................and wait.................and wait.................and BANG, down I go :mmmm

hillclimb151.jpg

hillclimb152.jpg

ooops :(

Marshalls and paramedics come running over, I pick myself up and they want to cart me off in the ambulance 'cos I'm limping.

I expalin I'm limping 'cos I've only got one leg, they piss themselves laughing and tell me to feck off as I'm beyond help :aidan and I ride off back to the pits with my tail between my legs......

I colapse into the pits feeling very sorry for myself and 5 minutes later Amanda arrives out of breath and in tears having seen me go down and heard the thud and sound of scraping metal - in that worried, upset sort of way she wasn't impressed and had a right go at me for scaring the sh1t out of her......oh how we'll laugh about this later (I hope!) :D

Anyway, sensible head back on and my final run goes without incident and my one actual timed run is identical to the best time I put in on my old race tuned CCM so I'm happy (but I have a long way to go, some 10 seconds behind the winning time IIRC).

It was a great weekend and I think I learnt a lot, both about the bike and about myself; firstly some full wets are going to be fitted both front and back and I am going to have to start taking some of it less seriously in order to relax and be more consistent but also take some of it a bit more seriously and think a bit more carefully about my lines etc.

I'll defo be doing it next year and hope to get at least 6 or 7 rounds in. The only problem is the distance as a lot of the rounds are in the 'deep' west country' so the full championship is just not doable for me.

Any of you lot fancy having a go :nenau I can highly reccomend it and if I can do it then anybody can (I'm not being modest, I really AM crap at it :)). It doesn't matter what bike you use; I intend using the GS at at least one of the rounds next year :thumb2

Any way, if you do fancy giving it a go feel free to drop me a line and I can fill you in on the details and/or check out the NHCA web site :thumb2

Here's a few more piccies just to prove you can do it on any bike, 2 or 3 wheels :thumb2

And lastly, a big thanks to the marshalls for making it all possible :clap

Thanks for reading :)

And just to prove ...........

............. you don't need a powerful, lithe Supermoto such as the DRZ ;)

C'mon, let's get a possie of GS's out at one of the rounds next year, you know it makes sense :bounce1 :bounce1

Andres

Well done Andres thanks for the update and piccies.

Dont worry about the falling off and potentially lookin' like a numpty, if it wasn't for people like you doin' that on a regular basis nobody would go to watch ;)

Great write up again Andres. Now I have the bike rack is fitted I am sooo tempted, if only to make up at the back :)

You make it sound great fun and really enjoyable.

Still, you would'nt get me doing it, I'm a big wuss

Well done, be proud of yourself,

Dave:bounce1

Go for it, go for it :bounce1

I'll start nagging you in the new year and make sure you come along to one, you'll have a ball :thumb2

Andres
I mailed Christel a link to this thread a bit earlier and have been nagged all morning on MSN. I will come and have a look and maybe play next year :D

Good Report,Andres.Well i've been signed up to do some Straightliners events with Team Knob Ends (No Bends-Geddit ?) from the ZRXOC using the ZRX,so a Twisty Sprint or two ought to be do-able.Megamoto or KTM 950 SM ?

Megamoto, MEGAMOTO :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1

Looks like there may well be at least three ukGSers on Boxers next year if you bring that and another on one of those girly 450s ;)

Roll on team ukGSer - any chance of some sponsorship Paul :aidan

Andres

Edit Forgot to add this picture for the benefit of one of my premier sponsors, Mr David Hale :thumb

Hey can I be a sponsor as well and bung some duct tape in the post? :D:D

As that's possibly the best deal I'm likely to be offered and as the bike is pretty much held together with the stuff;

Yes please - preferably silver (and if you've got as couple of cable ties I'll have 'em and all) :thumb

Andres

welldone chap

............and I didn't come last, 16th out of 17 in the 500cc class :bounce1 and 50th overall in the National championship :bounce1:bounce1

Clearly I have some way to go :o but hey, it's a start :thumb

if yer interested i've a few part worn cut slicks you can have FOC if you want. I won't be going back to racing supermoto:tearsso they are surplus to requirements. Just a tip, you may want to get yourself some tracktight or equivelent for your tyres, they help soften up the rubber and make it grip harder, which for the short runs in hillclimbing would help. Demon tweeks sell it. I'd love to have a bash, maybe i could borrow back my old ktm and give her a blast. mmmmm that might be an idea. Here's a photo of her in her prime, 78bhp 570cc, awsome monster, oh yeh get your hands on a hole shot device, holds the forks down for the start, meens you can get much more power down off the line:thumb

Just been having a read of this and realised that I have got just about everything to be able to give this a go. DRZ, SM wheels, van, but no leathers. Any other option on clothing ?
