I'm in the process of servicing and upgrading my 1998 R1100GS with 35,000 miles in preparation for its first long trip this year - Latvia to Spain and return.
I've owned the bike for the last 10 years and its been reliable enough.

My HES is original I believe. After reading about the Hall sensor problems of others, which I don't want to experience during the trip, given the age of the bike should I change the HES before the trip? Then rewire the old one and keep it as a spare?
Is the "replica" unit from Tills.de a quality item?

That's totally for your peace of mind... My HES failures have occured at 70-80k and seems in part due to heat and miles... I have had both aftermarket and genuine via Motorworks and they have both been fine... There are a few things that could go wrong but hardly any that probably will...

At that age, calendar, not miles, i would change it.
Would suck to be some where, on a great trip, and then have to work out and resolve that.
Mine failed 10km from home on way to work, and was just inconvenient. To happen many km away from home, and then to get a replacement to where ever you are, effort.
And when it failes, you are pushing your moto.

I used to carry a spare if going abroad,
It can be changed very simply at the side of the road - I’m sure I done a “how to” write up about tapping the starter motor to undo the pulley bolt ..
But even if you aren’t capable it’s a straightforward job for any mechanic/garage to fit one, as long as you have one with you :D

sorry to hijack the thread but mi going to re-wire mine, I can get some silicone high temperature wire that is rated to 200 deg c, is this high enough, not sure how hot it gets in there.

That's my plan is to try and fix it before it is broken.
