Finally got around to digging this out of my garage to post details about. When I bought my first GS, I heard that the Vario panniers had no protective coating to prevent oxidation of the aluminium bits so I went on the internet and found this stuff:

It's easy to apply and three years later is still going strong with no peeling or yellowing. I know there are lots of products out there that do the same job, including lacquers etc but this stuff is much easier to apply and is cheaper.
