One of my Daughters has been racing for the past few days in the World Rowing Masters Regatta in Banyoles (Northern Spain near Girona) (Masters she's 29 :ROFLMAO:) Under the auspices of Belfast Rowing club and in Mixed teams from Commercial (Dublin) and Belfast, Commercial and Tralee. All under the umbrella of Rowing Ireland. She's the one in the red square. :D

5 Events over 3 days

An eight comprising Belfast, Commercial and Tralee.
A quad (one oar each) and a cox Belfast Rowing Club
Double sculls X2 with an older partner of a different age class and one the same age BRC
and the 4 sculls above with BRC and Commercial.

Rowing Ireland have done really well over all of the age classes......but we do have plenty of water!!

3 seconds and two thirds overall. Looks like a fantastic fun event.

I rode round Banyoles last year!

Well done her!

A few from our club have been over there racing - looks like a fantastic event.

My daughter has just started in J16s and has raced in Brit Champs and Nat Schools, so I’m used to standing by various rivers and lakes for hours on end.

Its a great sport. My daughter started at Uni in QUB Belfast.

I started at the grand old age of 58 - so I am a bit shit at it to be honest.
My eldest was doing a lot of swimming at the time, but decided she wanted to give rowing a go, so came over my Club aged 12 for a try out and just loved it.

This is her in her single at Brit Champs this year aged 15. She now trains 8 times a week! BR304741-(ZF-0857-44548-1-001).jpeg

I rowed at school in between rugby seasons. We were encouraged to by the rugby coach and the rowing coach, (in order to keep in peak physical fitness 🤣.) Although we “ballasted” the boat fairly well 😉, we made up for it in raw power from the start (but faded a bit after that, especially with the added drag!) We worried the regular school 8 a few times, but it gave me an insight into how fit they were. It’s a wonderful sport.

Interesting that rowing (as with rugby, the RNLI and, I believe the Royal College of Surgeons) operates under a joint ‘flag’. There again, if you are drowning or going under the knife, the origin (and possibly, politics) of the fellow in charge of rescuing you becomes very much of secondary importance.

:beerjug:

PS I have never done any rowing, something I regret.

Yip. Lighthouses is the other one North and South. Commissioner for Irish Lights.

A little story that on returning back from the Middle East, I fancied joining a rowing club. I didn’t think I was in bad condition but their gaze soon turned to Sally and they asked, “Does she cox.”:ROFLMAO:

Just back from the stroke seat in a quad this morning.

I was chatting to a couple of our guys who have just returned from their trip to the Masters in Spain. One is in his late 50s, the other turned 70 a couple of month ago. They race regularly together and are not too shabby. They were telling me that Masters used to be call Veterans, and you became one of those at 28 years old

If you’re between 18 and 27 - you race in the Open class. Obviously the very best stay on beyond 28 to race in Worlds, Olympics etc. but to give you an example of how short the window of top performance is, we have Emily Craig in our club (Olympic gold in double sculls) and she retired at 32 years old!

Regardless of what performance group you are in, it’s still a fantastic way to keep fit though, and there is nothing better than being on the river in a sculling boat first thing in the morning!
