Proven...another way to stop ABS fault lights flashing

For about a week I`ve had the classic alternating flashing ABS light problem on my Kalahari 1100....in the past it was always cured by switching off after a few yards ,then restarting,and all would be well.

Not this last week though...it just wouldn`t reset.

The battery is only about 18 months old,and I always use an Optimate.

I was considering going through the ABS reset procedure via the connector block...until I remembered another way....

I switched the ignition on this morning....then waited a few seconds (in fact it was the time taken to put my gloves on).

When I rode off,the ABS set itself..

To prove the theory,I followed the same procedure on my way home from work,as I had a few errands to do and this involved parking up on six occasions.

Each time I switched on,I waited a few seconds before starting the engine.

The ABS set itself every time....

I`ll admit that it`s not my idea...I remember reading it somewhere within the bowels of all the 'ABS fault' Threads on here,and I can`t remember whose idea it was,sorry.....but......it works

It was me, and not the first time i've said it. Posted it a couple days ago, but i can't find it now ?

Part of the ABS self check is the battery voltage. If you turn on the ignition and hit the starter as it's checking, it'll read a very low voltage at the battery, due to the draw from the starter, and it will turn itself off as a safety precaution, due to lack of volts.
If you turn the ignition on, wait a few seconds till the ABS has self checked, then hit the starter, all should be well .
Also turn off the lights, heated grips and other assorted electrics.

Your confusing yourself - the ABS has tested itself before you pull away ( as i've said in the previous post, it checks itself as soon as the ignition is turned on). Don't confuse the noise that the ABS makes as you pull away, with the ABS "setting" itself.

Don't think too much, Keep it simple. Just do as i've said in the previous post.

I used to believe everything you wrote until the episode of the lambda sensor curing a starting problem. Now I only believe your advice the second time I read it.

just thought i would put the troubled mind to rest. Steptoe it was my thread on backwards rolling strangeness and the ABS that you posted the: "wait 5 seconds" and then ignite advice.

Tried that ... several times . Doesn't work on an 1100 GS.

But once warmed up, I wait for it to flash 4 times before stabbing the button - no probs.

If you turn the ignition on, and you get alternate flashing lights straight away, the battery is not in good condition.

Your symptoms sound like your battery isn't able to hold a full charge overnight.

No matter what method you try, if the battery isn't 100% it ain't diddly squat

Yup , it's on the shopping list anyway, seems to hold the cahrge , but not as strong as I would like on a cold starting in this weather.

It does the usual diagnostics every time, just sometimes on cold starts I get the alternates. Once it has fired I never see the alternates again , until it has been left for a few days.

Also it's coming up for it's 36K service and never had the alternator belt replaced... so that will not be helping if it is worn enough to slip slightly on the initial fire up.
