Some mates and I are going to tour the south for a week at the end of May.

It's a trip I've been meaning to do for years, taking in the "usual" haunts such as the Beara Peninsula ,Ring of Kerry etc etc.But none of us have ever been.

Has anybody got any good recommendations for places to stay ?

The others usually camp but this year I was thinking more like cracking little village pubs with a few rooms upstairs and live music down below-or is that just a stereotypical myth these days ?

If anybody has any route recommendations/places to avoid that would be useful as well.

Sounds like Crottys in Kilrush should be on your list on the way down.

Forray South !

On my last spin south , I found that the B&B,s weretn competing with the Hotels .

A B&B will try and get Eur70 a head off you .
The Hotels are trying Very hard , i had a Night in a nice establishment for Eur40 B&B.

Agreed hotels are trying & given the added convenience of a bar/resteraunt under the same roof are often a better option BUT I've never been hit with €70 for B/B. Either the figures are inadvertently transposed or someone was trying to even up a previous score:D

Bushe's in Baltimore is a lovely spot.

I would look for recommendations about what towns and villages to stay in, according to your plans. Most are quite small so you will be able to source good accommodation and walk to nearby bars and restaurants.

There will be no problem picking up a place to stay in May, just turn up. As has been said before, hotels are trying hard for occupancy, so deals are there to be had.

The ring of Kerry can be busy, but there are loads of brilliant roads nearby not suitable for coaches.

Enjoy your trip, and post up how you get on.

Vaughan's Liscannor

Fits the bill of what you seek. Plus a bonus of a great seafood restaurant. They have 3 or 4 rooms I think. Great grub!

And a couple of other pub 100 yds up the street for a change of scenery.

Suppose it depends where ya wanna go.
But there's very few sh1tholes survived the Celtic Tiger.
And those that didn't have a decent upgrade haven't survived the recession !

The official tourist site isn't a bad place to start
Being more inclined towards booking somewhere when I've had enough for the day I use booking.com & it's never let me down (yet) :rob

This is our rough itinerary, according to my mate who like to do the planning :

Day 1 - Ride through Wales ending up at Holyhead. Stop overnight.

Day 2 - Looking towards the 8am Holyhead - Dublin ferry which gets to Dublin at about 1130. Lunch in Dublin then a coastal ride to Waterford for overnight stop.

Day 2 - Waterford through Cork, round south western corner and maybe look to stop in Bantry?

Day 3 - Bantry, round the Beara peninsula, the ring of Kerry and nightstop in Kilarney.

Day 4 - Kilarney, Dingle peninsula and then run up and either stop in Shannon or Limerick.

Day 5 - Limerick/Shannon to Galway

Day 6 - Galway to Sligo

Day 7 Fastride either Sligo- Dublin or Sligo - Belfast, ferry back to Holyhead and ride home.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far !!

Sent from my Nokia 3310 using Twatatalk

The Best biking road in Ireland , The N16 , Sligo - Enniskillen .
Brilliant , challenging and Very unforgiving.

As for accommodation , there is lots readily available , and a Massive variety in prices .
I would suggest you wing it ..

Day 2 -
Dublin - Dublin/Wicklow Mountains R115 R755 R752 R747 east R772 south to pick up the L1003 south, stick to the coast, pick up the R742,
then R741 to Ferryback and ferry across, then as you like to Waterford. Or any variation of the roads thereof.

Day 3 -
Take in The Vee along the way, R668/669 between Clougheen and Lismore/Cappoquin.

Neither pub nor B&B recommendation, but some very nice roads. :thumby:

I wouldn't stay in Holyhead on your first night, it's a shit hole. Also, don't stay in Shannon, it was newly built in the '60s, nothing there only a shopping centre.

There is a ferry from Tarbert in Kerry to Killimer in Clare, it would save quite a few miles going via Limerick.

Nice one-ta

Ten of the best.... I don't think so, Baltimore, my neck of the woods, used to be a lovely place, however now it is a sprawling holiday home town with a tiny centre and a few pubs, lost all of its charm because of it, avoid. But hey everybody has their own point of view. If I remember correctly you were planning this a year or two ago and I sent you some mapsource routes, you would do well to dig them out, but whatever....
