Is there any way or reconnecting the drive shaft with the final drive bevel box on my '89 GS 1000? Don't want to have to take the final drive off and fight with pivot stubs etc... is there a way that I can align it and push it back on from the gearbox end? Is there a thread I've missed... someone else must have been daft like me and pulled it ... just to see if it was attached!?@x%&!:

Oh dear!

The best way is to pull the swinging arm, with everything attached, point the drive shaft straight up and lower the driveshaft onto the stub.

We've all done it at some point or if not will do it in the future.

I wonder would there be a way to use string to tie the shaft into position before sliding it down the arm, you'd have to use a type of knot whereby once piositioned you pull the string and it undoes the knot. I'm sure climbers use such a knot to retrieve the rope theyve just abseiled down on.

I've managed to do it in the past by wedging a screwdriver in the lower uj through the pivot bearing hole. It's a real faff though. Much easier to pull the swinging arm

You're right - and being a climber(!) I could try it... It's an overhand knot on a looped piece of rope (string) - would have to keep the other end of the string out the gearbox end... having fallen off a 6a in Spain recently though I think I'll just pull the swinging arm! Thanks for the thought though...
