Down and left a bit.
Ok so i followed Steptoes guide for replacing the fork seals. Excellent post on the font of all wisdom. I found that with a little fork oil on the outside of the seal i was actually able to push them home with my fingers instaed of using the large socket which i didnt have anyway... :)

I then decided that i should pull off the exhaust and clean it up as its stainless and was really dirty. I cant seem to get the front of the pipes away from the head, they must be welded on with eons of dirt. Thinking i might just leave them on unless you have any ideas...

Gonna strip the brakes and clean thoroughly tomorrow then t cut and polish tank. change the spark plugs. clean the air filter and apply redex to petrol mix.

The bike is due an MOT so will get everything ready and clean again.

Anything else i could do to improve running while its stripped ???

Don't ...

... split the calipers, there's nothing to clean and you'll lose the tiny 'O' ring and spend ages looking for it :augie

i wouldn't spend too long looking for the o ring. it's normal practice to replace it and the seals when calipers are stripped.

having said that, i wouldn't split it anyway unless there was a problem.

I would not split them as such, that would mean a full bleed right ???

I usually use a toothbrush and some brake cleaner, then a dry cloth and a bud.:aidan

Exhausting

Don#'t touch the exhaust unles youve got to take off the heads you'll break the studs as likely as not and then you'll have agro. Don't get paraniod about cleaning just ride the bloody thing.
Dave ( I hate christmas ) GS roll on 2010.

Pull the alternator cover off and check the left side lower bolt moves freely (as in will jiggle in the hole a bit) when you slacken the nut If it's dead tight (as in solid) try a couple of light taps with a hammer and see if it slackens any

I just stripped off the front a mates adventure cos the damn thing had corroded into the alloy front casing!!! And was jammed solid!

No he doesn't wash it very often much to my dismay!! :(:(:(

BROKEN STUDS !!!

Ok consider it not to be removed. I did however get the Y piece and end can off. The O2 sensor was also a b1tch to remove but i used the king dick adjustable spanner on it and it give in..
The exhaust round jointy things are sittin in red diesel to get em freed up right n proper...:)

I just ordered a K&N air filer for it too.

gotta work tomorrow am but cant wait to get the marigolds back on and get at it in the avo...

Problem is i cant ride it, the mot is up on 14th this month. i have not booked one yet, will most likely have to wait till jan... Hilux surf will be used in the meantime...:aidan

I did try the light tapping but i think its well corroded into the head, i will leave it for now and do it later.

Removed my exhaust (except CAT) to allow access for painting of front engine cover. It was a real SOB of a job. Got all bolts loose after soaking with plus gas, but the manifolds just wouldn't move. Got a large rubber mallet & spent best part of 2 hours whacking the hell out of the inner curved surface of the downpipes alternating between each side. Eventually got them off, replaced the corroded studs & gave them a good clean up. Reassembled with plenty of anti-sieze paste so they will come off OK in the future.
Make sure you have new manifold gaskets available (dont think you can re-use the old ones) & stud extraction equipment, just incase the corroded studs snap off.

Regards
Paul
