looking for some sound advice as my introduction to the gsa isnt going to well...

ive recently just bought a 2006 gsa 1200 9000 miles on the clock. ive just come from sportsbikes to the wonderful world of the gsa and im still getting used to the quirks, knocks and rattlles of it :)

about a week ago it developed and rather strange ticking noise from the right hand cylinder head/rocker cover and to be honest was loud.after a call to my local bmw dealer they informed me it could be a the rocker float so away i went and took both rocker covers off and checked the end float.

manual says 0.04 is the tolerance so when i checked it it was more liked 0.20 so i reset them.valve clearances were perfect.

put it back together and fired her up.... the ticking noise is still there but it is much quiter than before BUT ITS STILL THERE.

ive searched this forum high and low and found all sorts of different sounds etc.im not gonna bleet on but i had to go through hell and high water for this bike and now im afraid thats its a bag of nails. it s gonna cost me near on £200 for my local dealer to have a look which i really dont have.

the only way i can sort of describe the noise is like an electrical relay clicking but im pretty positive its coming from the rocker cover.

so my question is how noise are the lumps and am i worrying about nothing...?

any help much appreciated

cheers jim

owt to do wi the chain tensioner?
on the 1150 they can rattle???

Isn't motoscot's workshop down that way...

I'm sure he wouldn't charge anything like £200 to look at it :augie

Mine rattles like a good un on start up but does 'quieten down' after a few seconds. I can still hear it ticking away from the rhs though - tappets, injectors etc doing their job. Don't know why this side is louder but it is.

If your worried about it why not post up in your local regions forum to see if there's someone else with a 1200 close by, then you could go and compare it.

thats exactly what i was thinking of doing

Are you certain of this Jim, I seem to recall 0.40 to 0.05mm as the tolerance from memory ? (0.20 would be fine IMO.)

A smaller gap is quieter but best not to go too small for fear of binding or stress to the valve train.

Did you measure all around the rocker shaft end for the tightest spot or just measure in one place? The clearance can vary depending where you put the feeler gauge.

FWIW my bike sounds like a bag of spanners too (the iPod comes in handy though).

theres a thread on here that said 0.05 as well but when i checked in the reprom manaul from bmw it said 0.04

would you have a contact for him ?

Here's a previous message from him:-

Hi I have just set up on my own servicing and repairing BMW motorcycles. I have spent the last 21 years as service manager at Slocombes of Neasden (London) who were a Main BMW franchised dealer.

I am a fully Qualified BMW Senior Technician and have most of the special tools and can do all the jobs that are normally carried out at main dealers at a fraction of the cost. I fit and balance wheels while you wait. I can offer a loan bike while your machine is serviced ... and can also collect if required. I have equipment to reset ABS and engine management faults etc

Steve Grover t/a Motoscot based in Caddington (between Luton / Dunstable)
you can reach me on 01582 419812 / 07843 056201 or [email protected] If I can help please don't hesitate to call me thanks Steve

Just to say I have no connection, and have never even used his workshop :augie

I would rather hear the valve clearances than not. The fuel injectors make the sounds you describe - try putting a screwdriver on the injector and see if that locates the sound to that area.

Sounds like the normal rattle, mine does it worse from cold or when really hot ,but its quiet when your moving and smooth at speed.Coming from a Jap 4 they sound like a tractor!!:thumb2

Use good ear plugs ;)

Worse thing you can do is ride a GS without them, all sorts of nasty rattles, whining, ticking noises if you do. And that's just because you can hear swmbo on the back :toungincheek

I wouldn't bother with a ticker killer - they just mask the symptoms and don't fix the actual problem (excess play in the throttle butterfly shaft due to wear).

You can find out if this is the problem by pressing your finger against the throttle quadrant on the side of the throttle body at tickover - if the noise stops, you've found the problem. If it really bothers you Scriminger Engineering will rebuild your throttle body properly for £50 (new bushes and new throttle shaft). However you'll then have to reset your throttle body balance when you put it back together - don't know how you do this on a new fangled 1200.

That said, most people just ride it until it gets unbearable and then get it fixed - I'm sure you've got a few years yet :D
