May seem a silly question :nenau just need to get my head around it, but if something like a nail ,screw or something sharp punctures the tyre and then punctures the tube, is it not possible to get you out of trouble to mushroom plug the tyre i.e stop n go type ,then once plugged blow tyre up to move on to get tube fixed providing the tyre bead still has a fair seal or are tubed tyres that crap at sealing the bead and loss of air via the spokes ??
LONG DRAWN OUT QUESTION BUT IS IT POSSIBLE ?? :thumb2
All replies welcome serious / stupid or just plain rood I have very thick skin :augie :thumby:

If your tyres need tubes then the rims are NOT tubeless and will loose pressure. Plugging the tyre will not work.

Errr let me think about this a mo...............................................................................................................................................................NO !

however on our mighty flat twin we have proper spoked rims so for us its a resounding yes:D:D:D:D:D

i had a friend once who called me in trouble because he couldn't understand why the can of puncture repair goo , wasn't working on his ktm ive never laughed so hard when i recieved the picture of white foam oozing from the spokes and firing out of the hole in the tyre :D:D:D:D:D

so your not the only one :rob

Are you talking about spoked rims on a GS or another bike?

Yeah n no I think F800s have tubed spoke tyre ,also R1200R classic maybe others ?? ,but I'm getting a NINE T with tubed tyres with central spokes as with the R1200R classic ,but I think I'm just going to have my phone set for speed dial puncture repair as the new bike dosnt come with a centre stand!!, you'd of thought nowadays the central spoked rim line could be sealed to stop leakage ??

Bearing in nind the type of tyres that will be fitted to the nineT Theres a good chance bmw will fit them with sealed spokes and tubeless rims enabling the fitment of tubeless tyres

sent from ??? hold on where the fuck am I ??????

Would be nice, but no the fitments going to be as the r1200r classic ,Middle laced spoked wheel with tubes :blast

Plugging the tyre alone on a tubed set up as in the 800 will not work. The bloody air will escape through all the spike holes'n around the tube valve exit :blast

Really a stupid question if you'd thought about it ;)

Punctures very rare these days, I'm glad to say. Two overland trips, two bike's with tubed tyres ... no punctures :thumb

I don't recommend fitting the Gloop stuff in to the inner tubes to stop you getting a puncture, what I would suggest is a can of the aerosol repair and re-inflate stuff you can get from most motorcycle accessory outlets. Used on a couple of occasions and got me out of trouble ... and that's with ...

motoguzzi use middle laced spokes on the stelvio but they are the O ring type thus allowing the use of tubeless tyres !

An O ring for where every spoke goes in to the rim?

Blimey, that's a lot of O rings that could leak :blast

Guess it must work OK though?

Does it?

Just last week I got a screw in the almost new rear tourance on my F800GS with spokes, I took it to get it repaired. The tyre says tubeless but it has a tube fitted.

Anyway, tube replaced, wheel re-balanced.

:-)

I use a two plan strategy ....

Plan A) if I get a puncture I'll use a can of the seal it and blow it back up again aerosol stuff .... worked on a couple of occasions, got me home :thumb2

Plan B) Mobile phone and recovery (not been used yet for a puncture on the road)

No problems worth mentioning to date, as said, with 103,000+ miles :D

To put things in perspective.....

Tubes don't get punctured......they get POPPED, like balloons, in most cases of the sort you refer to.

Imagine trying to re-seal the remnants of your 4 year old's part balloon when it's been popped.....It just ain't gonna happen :blast

Tubes in tubeless tyres after a rip can help, and tubes can be made up out of sweaty t shirts and skiddy pants all held together inside a ripped tyre with duct tape and cable ties, but other than that (or exotica like pre-fitted centre laced Guzzi shit), a popped tube us often a totally dead, shredded and useless collection of rubber tatters :thumb2

If you were lucky and only had a pinprick hole, you could in theory plug it, but the plug would have to pass cleanly through tyre AND tube, and that is just not going to work or last if it did.

Strip out the tube (easy on roadside) and either replace it or if only a pinprick, or patch it properly after removing remnants of cause in still embedded in tyre carcass.

(my first choice was always to replace with new after checking carcass, then patch at home base or camp after a beer and food)

:beerjug:

excuse my mechanical ignorance, can you use an aerosol seal it concoction on an inner tube ?
