Purchase advice R80G/S Dakar 1987

Are Paris Dakar's marked as such on the V5? I thought that it was a dealer fitted kit available for the G/S? How would you know if the kit was fitted by a dealer rather than added later?!

In addition - I've since had a good look at G/S Paris Dakar prices - they seem to be hitting somewhere between 10 - 15K at the moment for minters and as such the offer of a good bike at 7.5K would seem pretty good by comparison - even if it is still a horrible old nasty airhead:augie:P

i think that is correct, but those site will tell a G/S from an ST.

As I have said I thought the genuine dealer supplied had a signed tank, by one of the Dakar riders, the kit has the same tank without the signature, but I think they were all registered as a G/s,

that's not to say that the signature is not easily copied, but first off it would need to be registered in the years where it was produced, so an early 80's one is never going to be genuine, leaving aside the ST model made into a G/s copy!

if you du get it I have a nice front bracke upgrade for sale

Thanks all....well, it is a genuine Dakar....the original purchase receipt is with the bike as is other supporting docs. It is also a BAMW restored bike in great condition. Having looked at some German sites the asking price doesn't seem outrageous....and as others have pointed out, will lose allot less money than my WC GSA. But...taking it on the dirt probably not a sensible option given the values but certainly will use it for road use.

I hear the torque action on the rear swing arm can give some interesting riding characteristics. So, need to ride one to see if I can acquire the taste...if so, I think I am going to go for it.

Managed to get some photos sent through as well.

That looks absolutely lovely!:thumb2

Getting off my paralever and onto my twin-shock, the dipping and lifting under throttle changes is certainly noticeable, but not a problem at all, just character, in a similar way to the tipping sideways that they all do when you blip the throttle. I imagine the dipping is more pronounced with longer G/S travel, but it's so pretty!

Even if you extended the search to Europe, I think you would really struggle to find/import/register one this nice for the asking price. I'll have first dibs if you don't want it!:D

I would suggest a couple of hundred miles to ensure the bike:rider bond forms correctly...

A short spin might leave you feeling that its a bit quirky.

A problem that seems to exist in print and passed on by word of mouth by people that haven't actually ridden an old BMW and can't cope without a gear indicator to know which gear they're in.

You'll notice it for the first 5 minutes and then the "problem" just disappears and you'll never give it a second thought ever again.

I concur, I don't notice any difference between the R80GS and the R80G/s, I was worried when it was posted, because I thought mine might be at fault, the newer model handles better, but only slightly, anyhow the scary thing is the brakes, they keep you on your toes :D

Is this the same Bike which BAMW has for sale at £8950, sounds like you been offered a bargin at £7.5k..................

The thread got me thinking about the factory Paris Dakars and the dealer fit kits. I found this article which seems to offer an explanation as to how to identify the provenance of a G/S Paris Dakar.

I spoke to Mick Barr a few years ago about the Paris Dakar bikes. He ran a bmw dealership in Leicester in the 80's. Mick said if a customer ordered a pd a standard g/s was delivered along with the pd kit, the dealer then had an allowance built into the price to fit the kit.

Jim cray worked for Mick Barr so if you know Jim cray it would be worth asking him.

Get it bought, it looks like a lovely bike, in really good nick. Re building a snotter into good order is devilishly expensive when using new BMW parts, so in my books, this bike is decent value.

Some of that information is absolute double bollox. :D
