ok, time for a dumb question.

I am in the process of putting my 1150GS back together and am failing to see how how the 6 connector blocks that sit stared the handlebars and the ECU stay put.

How do i correctly fasten these? (Is it as simple as tape? The Repair manual is not helping me).

I'm almost ready to finish the project, but this is driving me spare.

The blocks are currently flopping about and I don't want that.

Pictured are the items I am referring to..

They clip to each other. Maybe someone has their tank off and can take a pick for you?

Hi Tiktok
My (genuine BMW!) workshop manual has very clear "drawings" of how all the wiring and connectors are located on the bike and if you ZOOM IN on the image it is very detailed as to which connectors are clipped where and which are just cable-tied at the side.
Probably much clearer than a photo of real bike with the tank off - grotty:eek:
Is the manual you have a download of the BMW manual?

Hi guys, I think I have explained myself poorly. I'm not confused about what clips to what, that is self explanatory (thank you BMW).
What I don't get is how does each connector block stay in place (as in the photo)? Is it tape, is it a bracket?

In the repair manual, pages 295-300 just show the blocks sitting there behind the headstock, with visible means of holding them in place. Mine flop about all over the place

Hi Grizzly - I have the BMW repair manual (p/n 01 79 0 021 120), I presume this is the same as yours?? If not, would you be able to send me an image that explains things, or give me the part number of the document you use?

This manual does not show how the connector blocks stay put, no matter how far one zooms in.

It's going to be something really obvious I know, but I can't see the wood for the trees.

Each block normally has a male/ female sliding clip. First attaches to the headstock which should have a little bit of plastic. Slide the block onto it and it clicks in place. Then the next block clips to that.
The little connectors for things like heated grips, normally just sit between the larger blocks. I used cable ties to secure such as the engine temperature plug in place using the various holes in the headstock.

No pics though I'm afraid

Thanks Stu, the headstock is completely smooth. I guess I am missing a bracket or something that blocks clip onto.

Not sure if this is any clearer for you. I cannot remember if these are attached to a plate above the ignition coil. But you can see the little clips that allow the blocks to fit together. Whack a photo of you have up on here and it may be easier to know if you are missing something.

Thanks Stu, here are the photos of where I am up to now.

I just don't see how the blocks stay in place.

(Ignore the cable tie, that's temporary).

Btw - I do know the blocks need to rotated 90degrees to mount.

The ignition coil. The blocks aren't attached to anything.

On your bike, what do the connecting blocks attach to in order to remain in situ?

Hi Tiktok,
I think there is a plate they clip to - I can't check my GS 'cos it's in a container heading elsewhere, but I'm sure somebody will?
I checked on the MaxBMW parts fiche but no joy on there.
The manual number you list is the same as mine:thumb - it doesn't help you if there's a plate missing but the illustrations do show a lot of detail of how BMW expect all the various wires and plugs to be stowed and secured.

This picture is pinched from the web along with the one above. But have a look at the bottom with the horizontal plug (engine temp probe). Can you see it's attached to a piece of metal with holes in it and a couple of cable ties holding the loom in the horizontal position. That's what all the other blocks attach to further up using the little clips attached to it. In the centre at the bottom you can just see a little black plastic square. That's the base for a block to slide into and should be a few x3 further up for the bigger blocks to clip into.

Thanks guys, I checked realoem, no joy there. I'll go through the bits in the garage (again) and maybe give Motorworks a call.

This is the flat section you are looking for and you can see the plastic clips sitting proud.

On mine the clips that the block fasten onto the headstock with are fixed with double sided tape...

Thanks everybody. I found the relevant part at the bottom of a box of 'miscellaneous' bits. A quick clean and it'll be back in the bike in due course.

Hey Tiktok,
Better check through that box of 'miscellaneous' bits in case there's anything else that should have been refitted by now:rolleyes:
