PX or private sell?

Just after some advice re BMW dealers and whether it is better to PX or sell privately when I come to put in an order for a 1200GS.

I know that private sale is usually best for getting the most, but the hassle is a pain and I wont want to be in a negative cashflow situation. So is it really worth it?

BTW, my current bike is a Y2K VFR800 FiY with 17k miles on the clock (currently doing up to 1000 miles a month though).

It all depends on what you get offered by the dealer for a part ex. If you are happy with what they give you, then go for it, but if not, try the private sale. But make sure you do your research on what your current bike is worth before you go to the dealer. Look in the classifieds in MCN to see what dealers and private sellers are knocking them out for. If you know anyone who has access to CAP or Glasses, ask them if they can look to see what your VFR is listed at.

You are unlikely to get a discount on the price of a new 1200 though. In theory, the dealer should have a bit more scope on part ex, but it also depends on their second hand stock situation. If they already have a few VFRs' in stock and they are not moving, they are unlikely to want to take another one, and they will offer a silly price to you in an attempt to discourage the part ex.

Just been to the dealers today,
he said waiting list for him was October.

So order one now,
you will have plenty of time to figure
out how to pay for it :P

if you want one quicker
i've heard the french have a few spare ;)

I have just returned from a weekend in France & happened to spot a dealership with 2 yellow R1200GS's in the showroom.

Interesting.......i thought the Frogs were well keen on big trailies/supermotards......

Would have thought that a GS with about spot-on their legal 100 bhp limit would have sold really well over there....is there something they know that we don't????

(Maybe it's their inate sense of style......that would explain why the 12 isn't selling:P )
 
Private Sale.....

Prior to getting the 1200GS, I sold my 1150RT privately, with a year's tax, 12 mts BMW warranty and the 18k service completed and still netted nearly a grand more than any dealer would offer me in P/X....the only slight problem being that my purchaser collected the RT about six weeks before the GS arrived, leaving me bike-less....

The majority of my previous 14 BMW's have gone this way & I'd only evr consider P/X as a 'last resort'........
