Hi all,

is this a unit that is usable on a bike? Vibrations, hard drive (like SP2620) or other type of memory?

Anyone knows whether there's a European version planned, when?

Are maps upgradable, i.e. when a newer version of city select is launched, or will the unit get outdated together with the map content.

Tnx for the replies mates

Cheers

As I understand it (and there are many on this forum that know far more than I do), the Quest 2 should be just as suitable as the original Quest on a bike, and the original Quest is perfectly suited for bike use.

Like the original Quest, it's not hard-drive based memory, it's solid state-non-moving parts, so no problems with vibrations. From the information available for the US version, the device comes pre-loaded with a large set of maps ( I guess it's simillar to a very large set of basemaps), which are protected and cannot be removed, however, it does have free capacity for adding additional maps. So I guess the pre-loaded maps can go out of date, however, you should be able to add updated maps in the non-protected memory-space. The US version comes pre-loaded with the US, Canada & Puerto Rico, and has an additional 140MB for additional map storage.

You can change the voice language directly on the Quest 2 (which you couldn't do on the original Quest - you had to use a seperate application to upload a single alternative voice language), so it comes with 11 voice languages preloaded (suggests a much larger amount of system memory available).

As far as I am aware - the RAM parts (RAM-HOL-GA15 cradle and mounts) remain same, as with QPAC power & audio cable version. So no changes.

BTW: I read on another forum that the Quest 2 will not be available in europe until the end of the year.. Best contact Garmin support (online) for a more accurrate time-frame (they're very quick to respond)...

done that. It will be on the European market by end of november. The free memory will probably be less then the US version and there is no way of deleting parts of the map to free up some memory.
It is usableon a bike however.

Curoius - what advantage is there in Quest2? ie why change?

Extra memory for maps (although some of it is protected (i.e. permanent)
POI Loader
All the voices loaded simultaneously...

It's definitely an easier sell in the US, where the previous version of the Quest only had 115 megs available for mapping.

Doesn't sound like there's a huge incentive for European customers at the moment, but I'm sure Garmin are working with some kind of plan (or else selling the new product at the same price point as the original Quest).. Maybe they'll implement post-code searches for the UK?
