I've got the Quest, and the Ram cradle, and I know I can plug the quest in at home/hotel etc and recharge its internal 20 hour battery, but hey... I've got an Adv with a convenient power socket and i wanna use it... so the question.... Does anyone know where I can get a power lead with a 'BWM' plug on one end and a Quest socket on the other? ( even a bare wire lead considered ) and I'm not at all bothered about sound. And yes I do appreciate the the quest likes 5V not 12......

i spoke to gps warehouse about this yesterday. they told me garmin are releasing a docking cradle in feb that connects to the quest.

Yep, ordered mine from www.gpscity.com

Quest Motorcycle Cradle Kit with Bare Wire Cable, P/N 010-10610-00

:)

The 010-10610-00 is mid- Feb in US and later in Europe.

To my knowledge, two (third party suppliers) are looking at this Quest Biker cable , namely: GPS Warehouse and Adventure Motorcycling.

The GPSW 'brand' shall have bare wire version for Honda's etc and a round plug option for BMW's . Both are some months away.

GPSW shall have a BMW bike power cable for the 2610 .. soon !.

So, If you had a 'wish' list then consider some of these functions. Tell us .. What does the Quest biker cable for GSer need ????

* BMW plug ?
* Cable length ? = 0.5m, 1m longer (how long .. specify!!)
* audio jack plug option ?
* Incorporates voltage regulator
* volume control (sliding pot) ?

Can we have a 'straw poll' within the forum over the next few days and I shall give feedback to colleagues @ GPSW. Its your chance to have some say.

Thanks,

RAM-man

My 2p:

* Not bothered about BMW plug - I'd want to hardwire it to the battery so bare wires with a suitable inline fuse.
* Cable length - around 1m or enough to reach from h/bars to battery under the tank.
* Personally, I'm not fussed about audio.
* Needs to incorporate voltage regulator - either inline or within the mount.

Put me down for one if you get all the above......:thumb. I'm having to use a mobile phone case, cable-tied to the crossbar for now.

I would like:
Bare cable - 1M
Audio out
Volume not required with firmware upgrade
Voltage regulator / fuse

Thanks

The external antenna socket will still need to be accesable.

Top Effort......... my 2p worth....
* BMW plug:- preferred, but not essential
* Cable length ? = 0.3m if BM plug, 1m if bare
* audio jack plug option:- preferably not, but not too bothered
* Incorporates voltage regulator :- thats a must have
* volume control (sliding pot) ? not required

Hi All,

I said that I would update when more was known. Thanks to those who gave input to a cable spec.

The GPSW Quest power lead will have a new connector casing so it marries onto the rear of the GA15 cradle (this takes 4 - 6 weeks). An inline box will house a voltage regulator and audio amp.

I would like your thoughts on the following over the next few days:

(A) The design of the new Quest power cable has small box holding the electronics needed. The size of this box will depend on the electronic circuit inside.

(A1) Does this box need to be closer to the Quest GPS and its mount or closer to the battery, assuming some may want to hard wire or fit to non BMW bikes?

(A2) One thought is to locate the box (eg 200 - 250mm or 250 - 300mm) from the Quest connector (and the GA15 cradle). Does it need longer so its poked inside a crevice on the bike?

(A3) How will you secure the box?, tie wrap ?, poked inside a crevice? leave dangling ??, any other thoughts/ideas?

(B) Is there the likelihood of this power lead crossing over any hot areas (engine or exhaust) to the battery for hard wired use ?

(C) If this box is closer to the Quest and GA15 cradle, would it be better to have a 2.5mm jack socket in the box for the headphones & comms ?, instead of a cable ?

I learn that the other UK supplier in a Quest cable development has stopped. The GPSW Quest power lead will NOT attach onto the TT cradle. The Garmin 010-10610-00 is expected at end of March in UK. The Garmin unit has voltage reg and audio amp at the back of open cradle with a cable but still needs a mount so it can be attached onto the bike.

Regards,

RAM-man

OK, it won't be easy to get unanimity on this, but here's what I think:

(A) The design of the new Quest power cable has small box holding the electronics needed. The size of this box will depend on the electronic circuit inside.

(A1) Does this box need to be closer to the Quest GPS and its mount or closer to the battery, assuming some may want to hard wire or fit to non BMW bikes?

(A1) Closer to the battery. That's where you can easily wire it to the battery and there is room under the tank to mount it.

(A2) More like 600-700 mm to make it from the Quest position to the open spaces under the battery.

(A3) A lip with a hole opens the possibility to screw it to the frame somewhere under the tank. Or 2 slotted holes for 2 tie wraps.

(B) Is there the likelihood of this power lead crossing over any hot areas (engine or exhaust) to the battery for hard wired use ?
(B) No, it shouldn't come near the exhaust. Under the tank it does get warm because of the engine, but not HOT. Nowhere near the melting temperature of plastic. The room under the battery is stuffed with cables and relays already.

(C) If this box is closer to the Quest and GA15 cradle, would it be better to have a 2.5mm jack socket in the box for the headphones & comms ?, instead of a cable ?
(C) It depends on what the user wants. If it's for wiring into the input of an Autocom or similar, bare wires are the easiest option. Where the bare wires are is not very important as long as they are under the tank (dry), since you have to wire it from there to the input anyway. For earphones or helmetspeakers directly, a female plug is easier. A female plug needs to be reachable. So a 200-300mm cable from the box would be handy.

Hope this helps Steve :)
Cheers,
Michel

In contrast to Migsel, here are my preferences.

(A1) Close to the Quest cradle, ideally fixed to the RAM cradle or cable tied to the RAM arm.

(A2) Cable just long enough to allow fitment to the cradle or arm.

(A3) As above.

(B) N/A

(C) A 2.5mm jack (female) with water resistant flap/lid in box.

The reasoning behind this is that I don't take the GPS every time I ride the bike and as such do not want to leave the RAM mount hard wired on the bike. I also don't use the voice output on the bike so having a socket would give the option rather than having a cable to cut back.

When I used the V the supressor (?) was taped to the RAM cradle and the power cable also cable tied to the lanyard hole on the cradle with a length of lead and plug to a socket in the cockpit area. This meant when stopping I only had to undo the wingnut, disconnect the power lead and drop the whole lot into a locked top box / pannier.

That's probably confused the issue Steve, sorry.

Adam :)

Steve (or Ram-Man): I'm not far away from you in Hammersmith so I can drop by any lunchtime if you want to see the different options on a GS.
GS Bikes are all the same besides cosmetics so mine represent all besides the 1200 which is completely different (an ugly) beast...

Steve,

although I have recently changed bike to a Tiger (sits back and waits for the abuse), I have been watching the Quest post with great personal interest. I hope you would also be interested in some feedback for non BMW's.

I feel the comments on having the control box nearer the Quest unit would give people the option to tie it back to the mount / rear of the unit or tuck it away on any nearby cubbie holes. Also having a 2.5mm jack on the box, should as stated by others give greater flexability on the audio connection (if required).

Lastly although I will only be looking to run mine to a local 12V waterproof socket on the dash after fitting a plug. On a bike like the Tiger if the unit were to be hardwired to the battery, having some protection against heat would be a plus.

Looking forward to the production model.

Glen
