Ahem... I did a carb balance this afternoon and I noticed that if you run the bike without the black rubber covers on the brass nipples, the idle revs rise to about 1300, you can hear a slight sucking noise and the bike seems to rev harder. It really seems like the engine could do with more air if it is sucking more from the nipples......Can someone explain why this happens and if it OK to ride without the black rubber on?

Oh dear....nipples, black rubber, sucking and revving harder.... I don't think I'll survive the forecoming onslaught...

Lord forgive me....

Run with them off, and I would have thought the mixture would be too weak. Any engine will suck more air if it can find a leak.

Leave the rubber covers on or it will run weak :nono They're there for a reason!

No no no

It's sucking air from the nipples cos it's easier than sucking through the filter

Has potential to be an interesting thread though ;)

I might be shot down in flames here but;

with the bungs /nipples left off this will let the engine take in air forward of the butterfly, it would be just like taking the the big brass air bleed screws out.
The air bleed screws allows for an amount of air to be 'leaked in' to the intake to 'balance' the vacumm on the two throttle bodies to compensate for slightly different butterfly positions, this 'bleed' or 'bypassed air' has been drawn through the filter.
Removing the rubber plugs would let the engine take air from the less restrictive route, it would also upset the fueling as it would be getting more air relative to the position of the throttle spindle , this would cause the TPS to give the incorrect fueling message for the correct mixture.
Best guess is that it would run very weak, and any distance would most poss burn exhaust valves or piston.
Dont do it
:eek

Be very careful of vacuum nipples. You never know who has them until you find your tounge firmly stuck on one of them.
The best way to check is to put your ear up to her breast. Not too close or you might get yer eardrum sooked oot.
If you hear a slight hissing noise ........ youve found yourself a vacuum nipple.
Ive heard a lot of Finnish women have them.
Some young children have been sucked back inside the mother and have had to be born twice. Shocking.
