question about oil. I promise not to ask "what kind of oil should I use?"

Just bought some Castrol GTX 20W50 in order to make an oil change and stupid me didn't check the expiry date on the bottles so when I wanted to start the work I saw that the expiry date is April 2009. I am not going to make more than 2000 km until April next year (yeah I know...) so should I worry about the oil will become some kind of goo in my engine in the next six months or it will be ok?

It'll be fine... my guess is the 'expiry date' is the time it should be sitting on a shelf.. not the time it spends working in the engine.

Thanks mate!
I was afraid I'm gone to make some stupid thing to my beloved Behemoth.
By the way: my gs is a '99 too but still have the beak.
Here in Romania the bmw dealerships sells the bmw branded (castrol) mineral 20w50 with aprox 8 £ per liter so that's why I was searching for another source. Unfortunately Castrol here don't sell 20w50 anymore so I found a shop who brings oil from US (at aprox 3 £/liter) but seems to be on the last run with the expiry date.
Did anyone have tried Aral oil? Aral is a BP subsidiary and the oil is made in Germany as far as I know.

Look at the API rating.
Is it at least SF/SG?.

GTX 20W-50 exceeds API service SM, SL, SJ and SH (SF and SG became obsolete when the 1100 was just 2 years old as a model - 1996)

not sure what that has to do with this question though? Somehow I doubt this oil will be 12 years old.

Surely the issue is whether the oil has ever been exposed to the air - if so then I would be very cautious... but as the OP made no mention of that then there really is no problem. A quick google with keywords "engine oil shelf life" turns up page after page that all say the same.. engine oil DOESN'T have a 'shelf life' so long as its sealed.

My guess is the shelf life on these particular oils are more about American paranoia than anything else. perhaps theres more to it than that.. but anything in the oil that might go 'off' will be irrelevent as far as these old tractors are concerned.

The bottles don't have the seals broken and the date of manufacturing is April 2004 and yes the bottles were dusted and look not very apealing but is not 12 year old like someone said here. The API norm is SM/SL despite the fact that first edition Castrol GTX 20W50 was first sold in 1968 (40 years ago!!!). I think I will take a chance...
