Me and mine are visiting soon for a few days and staying at the Portsonachan Hotel for three nights and day tripping from there.
My question is, we want to go to the Isle of Skye on one of the days, can we get there and back and take in some of the sights?, and what route(s) would you recommend?
I've considered the ferry from Malaig to Skye as a short cut.
It would be great if we bumped into a few of you while we are touring around.
Cheers

First thing that I had to do was to google the Portsonachan Hotel :o . I take it that you're based in Oban then, Peejay?

You'll be spoiled for great roads and scenery when you're in the area. If you take the Malaig ferry, make sure you come back via the road south from Skye to Fort William. It's too good to miss :thumb2

Ronno,
The hotel is on Loch Awe and 30 odd miles from Oban, so not based there. I have looked at the road from Skye to Fort William via Invergarry and it is certainly a road I will do, just need to know if it will take up too much time doing it there and back? and the Malaig ferry looks like an option depending on how often it runs. I would have liked to had more time but we have 3 nights before heading back south:(

Getting the Malaig ferry north and coming south via road should be easily do'able but G.C. or HRH Oonyack would be far more knowledgable than me. :thumb2

Have a good trip, whatever you decide. Hope the weahter is kind to you :beerjug:

Hi Peejay, you wont have to go far from Portsonachan to find good roads and scenery.
If you want to go to Skye, and why wouldn’t you, take the Invergarry road up and the Armadale ferry back. Time for a few hours in Skye in between.
On the A830, (Mallaig/ Fort road) take the turn off at Lochailoirt and go around Glenuig/Strontian and onto the Corran Ferry at Ardgour, it truly is a fantastic run. Then back to Portsonachan, about an hour fron Corran.
Doable in a day? Easy, well it’s an 1150 GSA you ride isn’t it. :D
Yir job description sounds interesting btw. :nenau
Let me know when you plan this, I probably wont manage out to play, but you never know.

PS Have a look at Pog`s trip report to see some of the sights ;)

As I live in Connel, if you want a local run, just going around Loch Awe will gve you some fantastic scenery. If you look carefully, you'll see other single track roads by Loch Avich and thru Glen Lonan. They are not very frequently used!

I am currently down in Englandshire but will be back on Friday night. How long are you around for?

Cheers
Andy

Give the Gleneig-Kylerhea ferry a go! The big ferry looks a bit boring compared to this. single track roads to get to the port .. but it has so much character.

Andy,
Stayed at Portsonachan last year and did the roads around the loch, beautiful, although the on coming tin boxes, didnt want to give to much road over!!
Will look at your suggestion and look at fitting it in. We arrive on 11th Sept having stopped off in the Lake district, and depart south again on Friday 14th hopefully via Queens View and Rannoch. Thought the 12th we would head down to Mull of Kintyre then back up via Oban, 13th Isle of Skye. If the weather holds good (like last year) should be able to fit it all in in the short time we have up there.
