Just traded my KTM 1190R for a Quartz blue 1200RT SE with no other packages.

Could you experienced guys confirm a couple of things for me.

Im told the Daytime Running Lights cannot be retro fitted which makes sense but just want to be certain.

How much did you pay to have the lower running lights fitted? Looking at the latest catalogue the parts incl vat are £397ish.

Thanks in advance

Welcome!

Can't comment on the DRLs but the lower running lights are something like that - in fact I think slightly more expensive IIRC.

You will love your new bike. Good choice.

Thanks Puggy
Its a big change of riding style for me and my first BMW.

The lower running lights are £397 but the dealer has quoted £566 to buy and fit them. I'm going to haggle it out with them next week but maybe I'm just not up to speed with the cost of BMW ownership yet??

I have both the KTM 1190A and new RT. I really, really, like both. But that price for BMW LED lights dwarfs the equivalent KTM price. I was thinking of getting those same lights for the RT, but having already got the DRL, I may now give it a miss at that coin.

Why don't you fit some yourself? There are plenty to choose from and 2 or 3 hours on a Saturday morning is all it takes to fit yourself. Mike

Yes I think that is what I paid, it is a lot of money. When you order the lights, there are various fitting brackets and a switch that also have to be ordered that bumps up the price. Many people on the forum fit third party lights much more cheaply. Certainly Touratech do a selection, and their kit is usually of good quality. DIY would be very possible if you are fairly confident in this area.

What I would say is that I have the auto lights on my RT, and the lower LEDs only come one when you switch off the auto lights system, which switches from the DRL to the headlight. I think one advantage of not having the auto lights arrangement is that you have more control over when you have the LEDs on. I use them particularly when creeping between queues of cars on the A34 when everyone is queuing for the Oxford exit.... I am super nervous about being seen by the chap in the Audi trying to cross there lanes of traffic in one go....

Also, I am sure that others have said the same much more eloquently, many times before but....

I moved from a Honda VFR800 to 1150RT. I had never owned a BMW before, and in my opinion, the VFR is one of the best all round bikes ever made. I wanted a bike with longer legs and less tiring to ride long boring motorway miles (most of my day to day biking). The twin cylinder bike took some getting used to, as does the front para lever suspension (strangely I found it hard to judge when the bike had actually stopped moving as the bike doesn't do the dive down, bob back up thing that conventional set ups do). Just give the bike a few weeks and 1000 miles and I am sure you will love it. I am on my third and have tried all the competition including the K16GT, Pan, GTR, FJR etc and I still think the RT is the bets all round bike my far.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm looking forward to getting the bike which is about two weeks away due to work commitments. I'm hoping my pillion has a better experience on the RT than she had on the 1190R.

I'm sure that your pillion will love it. my lady says its the best ride she's ever had :augie:D......even more comfy than the K1600GT (haven't tried the GTL though).

The new RT is a fantastic bike.....but beware, its very easy to go too fast on one, due to the excellent fairing and screen. Resulting in me being invited to sit in a nice plain BMW car with flashing blue lights on (on two occasions in two weeks :blast).

I'm making good use of the Cruise control now...:augie

That's always been an RT trait, 90mph flip front up, chilling in clear air.
