A friend and I were looking at the bike today in the work garage (he was drooling over the 50W HID's in Main and Dip and the 35W HID Micro DE's) - so had it running (but without moving).

The Red ABS Warning light did not go off.

Question - is this usual? (I've not had the bike running without riding it before).

Cheers.

That is normal - it needs a turn of the front wheel for the ABS sensor to trigger.

Brake failure warning

Can I assume we are talking the Brake Failure caption as I bought a GS yesterday (being delivered on 16 Jun) and pointed out the same thing to be told that it always comes on until the bike is moving??:blast

Never happened on my old R1100GS (ABS) but that was nearly 11 years ago.:rob

And if i had a manual I would!!!!???? Thanks for the blindingly obvious but it's nice to see that generally most of the individuals on this site are helpfull:blast

Don't need to read it when I get it now do I.

Have fun, ride safe!

Picking up my very own GS puppy tomorrow!!!:thumb :beerjug: :clap :bounce1

brake pads fail again

to all you guys new to Gs
and its funny ways be warned
when you see that brake warning light go out
dont think for one min you are safe
your pads are not connected to any wiring what so ever
gs has 2 discs on front with sintered pads in
and 1 disk on the back with guess what
an organic set of pads in them
your brakes will be linked
pull on the front brake
and the single disk
with the super dooper organic pads will come on too
what happens next
the organic pads will wear out like lightning
BMW state that you must have the bike serviced
either every 6k miles or once a year
well
in Austria just 8 weeks after getting my bike serviced
and riding in torrential rain for 5 hours
my back brake organic pads just disintigrated
completly done in the disk
the BMW break down machine rolls into action
they pick up my back within 90mins
i go with them
they ask for and check my V5
mmmmmmmmmm just 9 months old
they check my service record
mmmmmmmmmmmmm 8 weeks ago
check bike has only 3450miles on the clock
arrrrrrrrrrrrrr
never mind
one new disc
yet another set of organic pads
and last but not least
after much head scratching and advising me
this should never happen
as the pads should last between 10K and 15k KMs
they present me with a bill for 370 euros
or in our own lingo £275.00
then they give me the old disc
old pads
and a smile
and say tatty bye go back home and get your dealer to sort it out
cos even though everything screams this is wrong
they just take the money
you have been warned
dont wait for the 6000 mile service
dont wait once a year
chuck a cusion on the floor
get a torch
and check your bloody expensive BMW your self
cos it will fail
it will cost you big time
it may even cost you your life
cos with no rear brakes
it dont like stopping in an emergency
and until some one
or a few of us get killed
this little gem will just get pushed under the carpet
and the money machine called MBW will just keep rollin:clap

did it

very smart answer
exactly as i would expect from some one like you
what i am trying to say
to all new GS owners is
dont expect your gs to be as reliable as the adverts
cos its not
as for your reply
i knew about this brake pad problem before it happened to my bike
a friend had exactly the same thing happen to his at 5K
so every day of that 17 day trip
every morning i checked the brakes
very easy to do
i am trying to find the cause
was it the 5 hours of torrential rain
that caused the pads to just break up or what
are you trying to say we should all stop say
every one hour
or half hour
or every 5 mins to keep on checking that the organic pad has just decided to brake up
instead of trying to be a know all smart alec
try to help new people understand they are not riding an invincible maching
it needs bmw to understand
when paying £12K to ride the dream and go around the world
we need it to last a little more than 3400 miles
before we have to cough up a further £275.00
understand
or do you need it explained any further:blast

If the dealer said it shouldn't have happened you shouldn't have paid, should have insisted it got done under warranty or claim it back under warranty

Just cause it says BMW don't expect it to be all high and mighty, they still have to rely on QC checks by their suppliers, and trust me they can be as shit as anyone else, I know, I work for one

Thats why I use EBC

update

i was in Austria at the time
Frey Autos (BMW)
no one spoke very good english
i am a knob who cant speak any other language
they have my bike
they have my keys
they want paying
thats it
i was told to take all parts back to uk
and let the dealer fight my cause
you know how many GSes were sold last 2 or 3 years
we are all gonna have an up hill struggle cos
they will never openly admit there is one hell of a major problem looming
theyve changed the abs system once already
thats still not working ok
now there is talk of changing the ratio between front and back braking power
we need to help people to realise what they have bought
harbours a major problem
it needs to be sorted
before a newbie comes an almighty cropper
the moment them pads disintigrate
even though you may have just checked em a few hours earlier
they may be right up the arse of a car in a down pour
and its game over
if i stopped this happening to just one bloke
by making him check more often
then thats what this blog is about
please help fellow gs ers
cos BMW arnt
forwarned
is
forarmed
the usual reply is
sorry brake pads arnt covered because they are consumables
there for not covered under warranty
mmmmmmmmmmm
so its ok to put substandard organic pads into a BMW that wont
even meet the first service
me thinks not
:mcgun

If you haven't contacted BMW already do so, then contact VOSA with the relevant pages from the forum to prove your not the only one thats this has been the problem to.
Even though they are consumables, they are subject to a "fit for Purpose" and if they break up in torrential rain then they are not fit, and should still last to the first service.

And post into a thread that was about rear pads not abs light(just a suggestion)

Gazza bart. Seems to me like suggested you got some faulty pads put in your bike. I'm sure iof this was a common fault we'd have heard a lot more stories like this on here or between our mates with GS's.

Oh and ffs use some punctuation. i'm getting breathless reading your posts :D

update

chased my dealer on saturday
two weekends running
chased BMW today
they chased dealer today as well
cos they phoned back and told me
and got the names correct
i will name and shame if they say no
then its off to small claims court i go
armed with loads of great info off this site
i will keep you all informed
the reason why i did this blog in the abs bit
was
i am new back to biking
and in my ignorence having owned lots of presteige motors
i stupidly thought that when the abs warning light went out
it was telling me my expensive BMW brakes were working ok
cos i thought the pads had a wire running through them like my car does
oh how very mis guided i was
so now you may understand
my need to help other misguided newbies
to understand the importance of checking regularly
:clap
