Quick bit of advice as I can't be arsed to search...

Go for a non ABS bike if you can get it very cheap because it will be VERY hard to sell later on. People like ABS.

Sorry you're wrong. My last 2 GSs were both non ABS and both sold easily for good money.

Sweetest 1200 ADV I had was a 2008 (October) Model in Magma red . I had no issues with it . fuel indicator worked , great finish , strongg performance , never used oil , great looking in red . That is the one I would go for :D

Why did you get rid of it ?

Owned two 1200's, the first was an '04 bike with servo brakes and lots if issues which got sorted under warranty, I felt like I was part of an unofficial product development team for BMW.

Traded it against my current 2008 GSA which has needed a new final drive due to rear wheel play at 10,000 miles under warranty, and a new fuel strip at my own cost, a new RH lower coil and RH Lambda probe.

My current bike is a keeper, the only improvement for me is the twin cam engine and I can't justify the cost to change. If I were you Twizzle I'd go for a twin cam GSA and strip/lube the exhaust flap valve immediately upon purchase.

Recently rode a new 1200LC and although nice it seemed much more road focused and not for me.

Having sold my 1150 last year, I'm planning my move to a 1200 GSA.

I need some quick info around model years...

2006 earliest model

2008 update

2010 twin cam..

Did any of these models have a servo? I'd like to avoid that if poss.....

Should the pre 2008 models be avoided?.

Fact me up...:D

IMHO the bike has improved, problems ironed out, the later the model you can afford, I seem to be in a minority of GS owners in that I have never had any reliability issues with any of the 3 ive owned, 2010 onwards twin cam would be my advice.
Good luck with search.:D

a twin cam if you can run to it.

and one made after september 2010 (IIRC) won't have the dodgy fuel strip, but a float mechanism ;)

If you can be arsed reading this far!

I have a 2008 GS- love it always will. Orange!

fuel pump controller changed, final drive change, still majic.

Tangine Mcqueen.

What a load of old bollox and people have ABS because they are told it will save them from idiotic riding styles and not because they like/dislike it. Fucking scare tactics from bureaucrats and manufacturers if you ask me:rolleyes:

Anyway.....my 56 plate GSA was one of the first without servo and I specced it without ABS and the brakes have been perfect. Ooodles of torque and I believe they changed this with the 2008 model where they moved the power up the range to give another 5 useless horse power. Sure there has been a bit of corrosion but it lives out side and has done 90k. The 1st FD lasted 73,000 miles before a rebuild and not because of a fail. The twin cam definately has more poke but if you can find a non servo 2006/7 bike you would be onto a good one I'm sure and sensibly priced now.

Thanks all for advice....

I think I'll wait awhile, save up some more and go for a TC....( or bottle it and buy an 1150 Adventure :D)

budget currently is just about 2006/7... So would need to look for Non ABS...as I don't want a servo bike..

(Remember I ride a 96 Harley EVO:D)

Interesting you mention torque, I never knew the actually moved the power band. I've got a 56 plate GS too, it did feel like it had more low down compared to the twin cam I borrowed while mine was in for a service.

Twin cam certainly pops and bangs more, loves to be revved was addictive to begin with, but then I found it droaned really badly at 80mph is cruise.

Something not mentioned here is seats, always borrowed something while mine was in for a service, I find 2006/7 year sears the best. I thought the twin cam one was rock hard!

Very true, that's why I mentioned second bikes

It used to be £750, then it went up to £1000 on 12's and now it's mandatory because of EEC rulings

No it isn't. EU regs will require all new bikes over 125cc to have ABS from 2016, but for now it is entirely optional. BMW choose to make it standard across the range, but that is a marketing/manufacturing decision by them and not a result of EU rulings.

My comment might be due to scare tactics, but I cant beat BMW marketing and press opinion so I dont even try. Then again only someone totally wedded to the luddite anti ABS way of life it would be so virulently anti ABS.
But hey its a free world.

Anyway, I bought a bike with ABS and all the gizmos. To be honest I'm enjoying them. The ABS has already paid for itself when brain fade made me almost not stop in time for a traffic island. At at a glance, it seemed to have a straight on bypass lane then realty sunk in. :eek I had to stand on the anchors and turn to avoid a looming kerb.

The ABS rattled away and bike simply did what I asked. Anything less would have hit the kerb or locked up and spat me off. It was totally my own fault but aunty BMW got me out of the poo.

I know how to stop right at the limit without ABS and for sure there is no way to steer and stop at the same time.
