Had the day off work today. Wife and kids are in Devon for her cousins wedding, so I've got a nice, long weekend all to myself. So, pottered around this morning, then headed up to Castellane for a coffee.

Nice sunny day, just before Comps sur Artuby, not much traffic aboot

Heading over the foothills though, some ominous looking cloud up ahead.

Not much traffic on the route Napoleon either.

So, had a coffee in Castellane with a few GS'ers. Saw three 1200s with British plates, but they weren't tossers :blast Turns out they were part of the gathering of the Blue Knights in Mandelieu this week. So, finished that, then headed over Mt Lachens, which at 1714m is the highest mountain in the Var. Thursday next week, it's also the start of the Lachens Mer 100km mountain bike ride which I'll be doing:D

This is the view towards Castellane from the road up Mt Lachens.

This is looking down from the road towards the Logis du Pain, which is the big roundabout on the Route Napoleon.

Up to the summit of Mt Lachens. Can't go right to the top as there's a military radar station for the nearby Canjuers camp.

Bonny bike though

Down the other side is a long dirt gravel track, which I'm come up a few times, but never gone down... Just above and to the right of the screen is Frejus on the coast..

Long way back down to the bottom of the valley on the South side.

Heading back down, directly above Bargemon, nice views, made a change from the last time I was there and it was hazy.

So, all in all, a lovely way to spend a couple of hours this afternoon. Going up the Col de la Bonette tomorrow....more pics to follow :D

Rob, great pics. Thanks for the memories, we spent one of our best family holidays in camp du verdon in castellane. As the kids grew up we bought a property in spain ...but looking at the pics france is more scenic.

I recall driving down to Frejus with the kids in the back of our 1983 vintage Mazda 626 Auto... spent a fortnight on a keycamp site nearby..... was in vicinity of San Tropez at 8am and back in Leicester at Midnight... which aint bad going for an old jalopy :D

16 hours from St Tropez to Leicester?? That's not bad going at all. Good ol' Japanese engineering eh? :D
