Quick Q regarding weight

Ive noticed that the 1100gs, 1150gs and 1200gs adv all weigh the same unladen. Is this really true? It amazes me that the new Adv can manage to be the same weight although its soo much bigger.

Do they "feel" the same weight for those of you who have had the priviledge to ride all?

I recently had a shot on the standard 1200GS, im thinking the extra 25kg on the 1150 will be very noticeable if it weights as much as the 12adv looks

Well, if it is extra, then it's no real mystery really is it?

That said, I've always been deeply suspicious of the claimed weight savings between the 1150 and 1200. Sure there's a difference but I doubt that it's anywhere near the claimed amount.

Things get even more murky when you look at the stated weights of the 1150 Adventure and the 1200 Adventure:

The stated weights differ by between 5 and 7 kilos (according to different sources) in favour of the 1200GSA.

Yet the 1200GS (according to the original blurb) was 30 kilos lighter than the 1150GS.

Even with my limited arithmetic, that means that the 1200GSA has added 25 kilos on the 1200GS. A bigger (plastic) tank, a bigger screen and some engine protection bars don't seem to account for that sort of difference (unless the 1200GS wasn't as 'feather-light' as claimed).

That said, it doesn't really matter that much. They're all heavy, a few kilos on anything that's heavy to start with makes little or no difference when it matters.

All weights fully fueled as per BMW Specs

1200 gs adventure - 256 Kg
1200 gs - 225Kg
1150 gs adventure - 253 Kg (276.5 Kg with full special equipment)
1150 gs - 249 Kg
1100 gs - 243 Kg

Trust me, picking up the extra 20 kg or so makes a difference.

The 1150 and the 1150 adventure are essentially the same bike. The adv feels bigger due to the bigger tank and the higher shocks. Full special equipment is all the extra panniers, bolt ons and pics of Ewan that BMW can stack on for you.

The 1200 was a redesign and they shaved off a lot of weight and then fattened it up for the adventure.

I have the 1150 and ridden a bit on the 12's and 12a's. There is a difference, but not substantial as all of the bikes are well balanced and built for purpose. Its also difficult to really put you finger on it as all these bikes have slightly different performance characteristics. The best thing to do is pop to the dealers and take a few for a spin. As said, they're all heavy...

Probably saved weight on valves and starter ring gear oh and a bit of earth wiring
