Quick question about mileage

Hello. A friend of mine is considering buying an 1100 with 36000 miles. What sort of mileage will these bikes get up to before they drop dead?

400,000 has been managed before.

If they are looked after they run and run and run and run. Not uncommon to see 100k bikes knocking around.

The engine is basic and hasn't changed much in years.

a bit more than 400,000.

i know we all hate old; out of date pictures.. but this is that very bike spotted in chile last march.

bike still mostly original... 15yrs old. "engine all stock - rings, pistons, bores etc. 4th FD bearing, 1 set of gearbox bearings replaced from bigger jobbies"

The more you ride them the further they go. (apparently)

at 33,000 it is just run in, providing it has been driven hard. If it hasn't been driven hard, it is not run in yet.

R1100R 189K and still sounds and goes the same as it did when brought at 40K. Yep i know it's a GS forum

My 1100GS is on 103,000 miles it's had one clutch an 2 final drive bearings.

Lots of Hong Kong Police BMW R850RTs parked downstairs ... 200 to 300,000 KMs on the clocks ... okay they are not 11 / 1150GS but the engines are basically the same (okay, a few hundred CCs less ) and the point is that if they are looked after they will do good mileage .

some 40,000 plus miles early models suffered from gearbox problems. third gear selector dogs jumping out, making the bike lunge

1994 up to 1997 after that they were modified and were ok.


1100GS 1995 with 1999 gearbox fitted..92,000 miles on clock

mines on 106, 000 now, still runs and rides fine. 36,000 is a new un unless it has the early gearbox in which case it may need fettling.

So an "S" reg 1100GS will probably have the later box, as the "S" is from the 1st Aug 1997? Is there a gearbox part number / serial number check you can do to confirm what you have?

I got my first GS, an 1100, a month or so ago. It is a `97 with 67K and rides and looks like a bike 3 years old. Normally I would not even look at a bike with this mileage on it (apart from maybe a VFR750 with full FSH), but I am confident that the simple engineering is sufficiently well tested now as nothing much has changed for decades! They are a bit `agricultural` because of this, but you can`t have it all ways.

My bike has 108k km; so far replaced, throttle cable, ignition coil and clutch. and oil, brakes, tyres, etc. got it last year and rode ~ 34k km since.

I rode a 1200gs yesterday, and would not trade it for mine in a milion years!

Its not something to worry about matey... some went bad... many have had no problems at all.. case in point being the one with 442,000 miles.. its a 95 model. not problems with his gear box. My fist 1199 was a 97 (built in late 96) no problems with that one either.
