I own a 2000 model GS, and am fairly sure that it does not have quick release option for the fuel lines under the tank.

I am putting togather a lighting package and want to wire it in. Following top advice, i have been told its best done with plenty of time and taking the tank off, so i can get at the fuse box to put a motoswitch in.

So.

1. How do you disconnect the tank without fuel going everywhere.. when you dont have the quick connectors..

2. Where can i get hold of them and how do you fit them?

I dont intent to take the tank off often, so if i can reasonably get away without putting the quick connectors in, i think i would go for that, following comments regarding fuel leaks and problems pinching O rings..etc.

PS.. any kind electrical whizes out there, wish to give me a hand with the lighting installation.. would be pint and food init for anyone who has so bravely gone before me down this path..

I have ordered a Migsel bar, and waiting to get a relay switch off Rob F, hoping to fit.. FF50 fog and driving lights..

Admitedly i may be jumping the gun, as i have not actually ridden the bike in full darkness yet,, but general opinion appears to be that the standard lights beam and intensity are lacking..

Cheers in advance..

John..

I've been there mate.... best thing is get the quick release connectors and fit them so you only have to do this once anyway.

I used a couple of small pieces of wood and a small clamp (woodwork type) . The wood avoids you damaging the hoses. Just tighten it up and it will stop and fuel leaking . Have a handy jerry can around to allow any fuel to be drained into and then fit the quick release connectors.

MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS COLD WHEN YOU DO THIS.....for obvious reasons :D

Rocks,

I'd be very suprised if your bike had the QD fittings. It's not too bad taking the fuel pipes off as long as you have a 7mm bolt to poke up the end of the fuel pipe and a rag to catch the fuel...just make sure the engines cold before you pull the pipe and that you have as little fuel in the tank as possible.

Which end

Cheers guys..

Which end of the pipe do you disconnect.. ie the pipe disconnected from the tank!.. or the pipe disconnected from the engine/carbs.. ?

Or is there a joint or junction somewhere?

I dont remember seeing anything, when i hitted the H&B enginer bars, and there wasnt a huge amount of free play.

But will run the fuel down to almost dry.. Is it just the one pipe with fuel in it..( just making sure.. never like messing with petrol).

Cheers for the warnings about hot engines.. i will certainly ensure the engine is cold.. and fire exstinguishers on standby...

Disconnect the pipes above the right hand throttle body, put a towel on the engine to catch any fuel that may get spilt, if you undo the fuel clip the pipe should be tight enough to prevent any fuel leaking, slowly pull the rubber pipe from the plastic one and have your thumb ready to plug the pipe when it comes apart...watch your eyes, petrol can spash from the pipe if it comes apart quickly. Make sure you have the bolt (to plug the pipe) within reach (don't ask me why I mention this :D ) and don't forget to mark the pipes with a bit of tape so you know which one is which.

The electric socket, just above the fuel pipe connections, will need to be disconnected along with the two breather pipes that sit just behind the tank bolt.

And watch you don't trap your fingers when you put the tank back on

Cheers guys..

Thanks again rob for the advice.. hope it wasnt too painfull discovering it all.

I think i may get my local garage to do the wiring in for me..
I spoke to them today and they said there shouldnot be a problem as long as the lights have a relay..

I like the look of the TT lamps, but cost is very high. However the xenon bulbs are second to none for light output,, but is the beam shape ok, or is it too narrow?

Can you have the TT fog lights on, and not dazzle oncoming traffic, ie can they be set to point lower.. or across?

I get a lot of reflection off the beak as well, shines up in my face, so thinking of blacking the beak centre, to stp the reflection.

So its either FF50 driving and fog lights, or TT Xenon and Fog light... hmm tough..

probably a bit of a daft questions but are all quick release connectors the same?

I want to make a petrol drain for the tank to use an existing QR connector so need to but a female or male attachement to match the ones already on the bike.

I noticed the bike ones say "CRC" on the release mechanism.

Ive seen on fleabay some QRs for around £15. Anybody know if these will be the same side???

If I was doing it again John I think I'd go the HID route high and low beam saves on weight less to damage offroad.Plus HID's are a lot cheaper.

Just my 2p :thumb2

Agree..

Forry, I would certainly agree with you if i was doing it again, would go with the hids.. back in 2004 mind when I put this up..lol.. HID were more costly.

As for quick connectors.. I believe their are different types and shapes out there, different ID's / OD's, angles, washers, ratings, etc etc...

I have an adv tank in the garage been waiting to go on the gs, but the qd issue has been one reason it has not gone on yet. I will prob just order some through my local bmw dealer when I do the swap which will probably be later in the year, if blue bell are still going.
