I’m looking at options for luggage and as nobody seems to have tackled OEM fit panniers yet, I am probably going to go for quick release pannier frames as i wont have them on the bike much. I think the options are the SW-Motech and Givi.. both using similar 90 degree turn fixings.. Is anyone aware of others and anyone got these and can vouch for quality / security of fit?

Thanks

I used the SW Motech ones many years ago on my Honda Blackbird. I can certainly vouch for the quality and fit of these frames. Literally 2-3 minutes to fit or remove them. Very solid construction and secure once fitted.

No idea about availability for the 1300 but I have used both Givi and SWM quick release rails since 2015. They are of similar quality and just as easy to use. The advantage with SWM is that the make adapter kits for other makes of pannier. I bought a R1200RS in 2016 but Givi do not make standard Monokey rails to fit, just the V system. I had used Givi QR rails on my previous bike, a Tracer, and wanted to carry on using my Givi Monokey boxes. SW Motech to the rescue with Evo QR rails and a Givi adapter kit, which was simple to add as the holes are pre-drilled in the frames.
In 2018 I added a S1000XR to the fleet and had Givi QR rails on that as well as.
I have only used Givi Monokey cases. I have a 30 year old E45 box used as a top box. I use E21 side cases as they give the bike a narrow profile for filtering. This is adequate capacity for 2 weeks away for me. I bought a set of locks so all 3 cases use the same key. I use this setup on the RS and XR as required.

Ah that’s a good point. I will check what adapters they do as that opens up more options. Thanks

I have sw motech QR rails on my 1300…… used them before on previous gs’s, and know they are good quality.

Easy to fit the brackets, and very quick and easy to fix the rails (and to remove them after any touring)

Never had the Givi ones, so cannot comment on how good/bad they are.

Like Bubb, I fitted the SW Motech quick release racks to my 1300, I use them with Givi Trekker cases and love the quality and look, I will admit to being dumb and bought the bike with the BMW case mounts but the SW racks come with the hardware for either adapting the BMW mounts or if you have none. Well built racks that can be installed/uninstalled in less than a minute. This is the 4th bike I have fitted SW quick release racks to

I have a set of the SW motech Pro side case frames . Came off my R1300 , I will be putting them on sale soon as have quite a few R1300 bits as went back to Ducati .

I have used both SW Motech and Givi and would say that the SW Motech have a better system for attachment /dismantling and are a slightly higher quality too

I looked at all pannier systems at ABR a couple of years ago
I thought the SW Motech designs of QD frames and versatility was head and shoulders above others
Additionally their own metal panniers also stand out, in terms of build quality & design in comparison to other major panniers

It is top quality stuff.

Not exactly quick release but I've gone with Lonerider motoracks and bags (20% off on Blackfriday so made these reasonable value for money*). I use panniers probably 4/5 times a year so no big deal fitting these for a trip (10-15mins max). Frame looks ok when the bags are off also. *last year they did another promotion in the spring also with 20% off.

I have the Givi quick release ones.
they have been ok but i have to say they suffer from rust, so wouldnt recommend.

Had them 4 years now but they started rusting after 12 months!! i keep cleaning it off but its getting worse, they need respraying really.

The SW Motech bars are not immune from rust. As stated above, I have used both with the same Givi boxes (as SWM have adapter kits). I no longer have the bike with the Givi stiff fitted so can't provide comparison pictures. My current SWM rails have rust where the powder coating has worn away near one of the pannier mounting points. The quick release bolts rusted from early on. There is also rust at some of the welds. Admittedly, they have been on the bike for much of the 36,000 miles and I often didn't bother removing them when riding without the side cases.
I would use them both again if I have another bike where I want to use my Givi E21 side cases. I think the Givi rails were quite a bit cheaper but you do not get the flexibility to fit adapter kits for other makes of case.

interesting that the SWM suffer the same.

they both need a coat of hammerite lol

Thing is they are removable so do last as they do not stay on the bike and a good clean down after a tour all good. I use them as I hate the frame look and plastic panniers.

Let me know if you want to sell them and what else you have. I tried to PM you but doesn’t look like I can
