This morning I hot iced a smell of petrol in my garage as soon as I turned on the ignition. I checked the fuel line QR connectors but no is true or petrol. Pulled off the plastic cover on the right hand side of the tank and hey presto there was the problem. The quick release connector in the picture was wet with petrol. I turned on the ignition and the petrol sprayed out at the join. So I have two questions for the collective.
1 If I seperate the unit will fuel run out of the tank ?

2 Is it likely that the leak is caused by a failed O ring ? I have a spare one from a repair to leaking connector under the tank on my other Adventure. Its part number C1 87 03 F1B 13 53 7 700 797 .

No pictures, so I'll take a guess.

If you have plastic connectors, particularly a plastic male connector, then it could be cracked or broken. They are prone to it.

If they are the original fitted connectors, then they have a check valve which shuts off fuel when they are separated.

If you do have plastic male connectors and they are broken, then when you try to seperate them the tip of the male stays inside the female preventing the check valve from operating. You need to remove it quick with long nose pliers or something similar or you will empty the tank.

Have container standing by just in case.

If it's just a split O ring then you shouldn't have any problems.

hi, change the connectors for ones totally metallic - male and female (nautical engines)... are better !

there are all in brass or inox and too reliable.

Yep! Plastic male connectors. Typical failure.

They all crack across the point where the female locking tab engages in the groove on the plastic male.

Why? Because the thickness of the plastic at the weak point is only O.5mm thick.

Go and buy yourself a good set of metal male connectors. The plastic female are OK, you can keep them on the bike as they rarely fail.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll be heading the dealer in morning as the bike needs fixing quick (parts) as it's going to a new owner this week. Thank goodness it happened in my ownership and not in first week of his.
