Quick release power supply to top box

I would like to fit power to my top box but would still like to remove it easily. As I see it there are 2 area's that need an elegant solution and the first being a waterproof connector outside of the box to allow it to be removed and then the actual grommet or gland to make the cable entry waterproof? I'm sure others have done this and probably in various ways. Can anyone help with a set-up that has worked well for them please?
 
Go no further than Powerlet's products. Well made, long lasting and reliable. Accept no alternatives.
 
Givi do (or certainly did) a powered topbox setup that had an in-built brake light. From what I recall it didn't have anything clever in the way of waterproof connectors - just a contact plate on the rack and corresponding spring connectors on the base of the topbox. The same kind of arrangement that a lot of hatchback cars have for the wiper connections. Here's a picture:

You could probably rig something like that without too much trouble. If it was me I'd include a microswitch on the rack so that, when the topbox wasn't mounted, the contacts weren't live. That's not necessary for a brake light connector because it's rarely on but probably more sensible for a constant power setup (even switched from the ignition).
 
If you can get some I like to use Plessy plugs, robust and completley waterproof

That'll be the Powerlet connectors, then?

Also available in the UK, though they are American in origin.

Alternatively, feck about for hours with micro-switches..... The choice is yours.

One tip, position and then cut the hole in the top box accurately. Get it the wrong size or in the wrong place and you'll be in one hell of a mess. A bit of time and care taken now will pay dividends in the future, trust me.

A friend of mine didn't.

PS With the reliability and now relatively competitive pricing of 'brick' battery charging packs, it's debatable whether connections like Powerlet really are the way to go. The flexibility of the 'brick' packs, maybe trumping the power leads and waterproof socket method.

I already carry a usb battery pack but we are camping for 5 days and I would like to be able to charge safely from the top box whilst underway.
 
No use now as you've already done it but back when I had an 1100, i wired my topbox for power with a quick release and arranged a flying lead which I could poke into my tankbag. I used waterproof 1/4 turn bayonet fittings from Farnell - worked well. I intend to do the same for my 1200 when I've worked out where to take a power feed from - no canbus trickery to worry about on the venerable 1100 :)
