Quick research on engine issue on WC motor.

Like you I had a Honda (albeit a Fireblade) for 6 years and not one problem with it. I bought a WC in July and had problems with switchgear and the engine (a new one has been put in now.)
Having said that I have just ordered a new GSA because mechanical/electrical problems aside:
1) It is a great bike and a joy to ride.
2) BMW customer service was excellent in my experience (Bahnstormers Alton).
3) I commuted once on my Firblade and swore never again. I did it once on the GS and carried on for four months and enjoyed every moment of it.
I totally admire Honda build quality and reliability but there is something very characterful about the GS that just lets you overlook it's faults and anyway who knows - you might be one of the lucky ones who has no problems at all. Go for it.

Previous bike was R1200R (roadster). I thought it was 'good and quick' until I tried the new GS. I can't believe how light and flickable it feels. Great feeling of confidence (not too much I hope). Great performance and I like the RAIN setting while I get used to it's handling in wet conditions. Reliability 100% over first 2700miles. Gearbox gets worse as it heats up. Working it hard in the summer resulted in virtually never finding neutral and occasionally dropping somewhere between 1st and 2nd (nothing on info panel). It needs a good push to engage 1st and don't get too close to the vehicle in front. I notice BMW overfilled the oil sump - could have something to do with it? Don't know
So in my book the big gamble paid off - BMW have 'reinvented' the GS for the next decade or more.

Had my Wc since may no problems unlike some on here 6000 miles in still love the bike.

...and that's fair enough! My Pan was incredibly reliable and oh so typically Honda ... :thumb2

I bought a 60 reg R1200RT six months ago after owning an ST1300 for ten years, so for what its worth hears my ten pence worth.
In ten years the PAN never let me down, and apart from servicing, tyres etc I never replaced any parts.

The switchgear on the RT is crap and BMW will not admit it. Both sides have now been replaced.
The engine is agricultural after the smooth V4.
I do however like the cruise control.

If Honda bring out a replacement for the PAN, I will go back to Honda in a flash.

I could have written this....
