Hi All,

I know this is a matter of differant screens and wind protection etc, but after riding with a full face lid for a while i am thinking of buying a motorcross lid, ie Aria tour X2 or the Shoei Hornet with the full visor.

I have used motorcross lids with goggles for years before this but did suffer from noise ( even with earplugs ) and wind blowing around inside the lid.

I just wondered if those who use the above lids find them for noise and wind blast around the eyes.

I've had an old Tour X and now have a Shoe Hornet. I find them both about the same in terms of noise and wind, though as you said its totally down to the bike, wind shield, conditions etc etc. Both visors will keep the wind out very effectively when closed, when open Im ok up to about 30/40mph, but would need goggles or sunglasses above that.

They're both noisier than my Schuberth C2, which in turn is noisier than my Schuberth S1, which is nice and quite and very comfy.

I will generally grab the Hornet when going for a ride, unless I think the weather is going to be dire, in which case the C2 gets an airing.

The Hornet comes with a chin protector thing which keeps some of the wind out, and helps with the Autocom Mic too. I improvised something similar for the Tour X which did the same job.

noisy crash helmets

Thanks Mike.

Just been out for a ride with my old Nolan motorcross lid with goggles which was both windy and noisy but would be ok methinks for short trips. I wouldnt wanna do a motorway trip with it though and will use my full face Aria for a trip down the coast tomorrow.

I went round the pyrenees twice with my Nolan on my old Varadero and it was fine. Hopefully he GS will be better when my GSA screen arrives.

Thanks for the comments.

I have an Aria Tour X and a BMW Enduro. Both are reasonably quiet but the BMW does suffer from some noise from the peak, this IMHO is due to it being too flimsy.I do not find it a problem unless I have my Autocom on and i find the peak rattle can cause false triggering.I do not wear earplugs.

I am also disappointed with the creaks and squeaks on my BMW helmet peak. Very comfortable, but squeaky. I'm gonna try it one day without the peak.

I can't yet bring myself to throw out my old Arai Quantum.

And I do now use ear plugs most of the time for longer runs.

If you've ever had an Arai why on Earth would you buy a BMW helmet?

Ever tried drinking from your camelbak wearing an Arai Astro whilst touring ?

My System 5 helmet is quieter, better ventilated, just as comfy, easy to flip open one-handed for a drink (when stopped officer, honest !!) or to mouth some choice words to blind cage drivers so they know I'm aggreived by their actions (or lack of).

The only fault with my System 5 is that in heavy rain, water droplets form above the visor and drip past the seal onto my nose.

Yes, I still wear the Arai (on track or if heavy rain is forecast) as it is very good.

If your so bothered about wind noise just buy a normal lid, unless you really want to look like Ewan or Charlie.

There's a very cheap Shoei Hornet DS, Large 59-60, Matt Grey, for sale on this site under "items for sale" section......
