The day started out well with a good turn out of bikes and the mist eventually burning off and the temperatures climbing

Bikes were still arriving as the Marshalls rode off and were still arriving as the main body moved out

A few kids from the hospice who were well enough were treated like royalty and given a full police escort whilst riding on the trikes from the clarion hotel down to the harbour

Sadly the Day was dulled by the 2 accidents One ended in a fatality and the more minor one probably due to inexperience where an L rider got too close to the hedge just past Ballygally and ended up flat on his back and his bike not far from him.

The second was when a southbound rider with no affiliation to our "Ride out!" was travellling southwards perhaps quicker than they should have been and when he saw the lead police bikes with the Blues etc going panicked and hit he brakes to hard sending him skidding into the police outrider breaking his leg the bike then carried on and proceeded to knock 3 or 4 more bikes over / down

Unfortunately the southbound rider was seriously injured and passed away

The run was abandonned and all the BIkes returned towards Carrick

The total raised for the childrens hospice was approx £7000

I'll not put the southbound riders name up in case friends and family haven't been informed I believe I knew the guy and he was a decent bloke with an affable nature who had been riding bikes for a very very long time

R.I.P. Tom :rose

What a sad day for all concerned. Dreadful. :(

Deepest sympathies to the family and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured.

When i heard about accident ,i hoped it wasnt on the run ,i have just found out about this . No one likes to hear of a biker down ,not the way to end what was a great day for the hospice , Sitting here in shock , Jaythro can you pass on my thoughts and prayers to the family of the fallen rider . and to the police rider who was doing a great job looking after all of us . Hope he mends quickly .

Not to detract from the tragedy of the event but this rideout tallied at £6000 at the gate (=1200 bikes)

£750 from a 2 day / night event at Abbeycentre and a Donation from the Animal shelter in Antrim of approx £100

Making a Total of Jsut under £7000 yes seven thousand pounds raised by the Quay Vipers for the Children Hospice N I YEsterday

Last time I seen you Geno you were sitting having a piece and a drink of tea by the outfit. I was Tail end charlie on the run with me wee tool kit and a gallon of go go juice and jump leads and other bits and bobs

Damn there some cardboard cutouts on the run One poor girl was at the tail pulling 40 max and being sheperded by her boyfriend on a 52 plate GS adventure with Ally panniers, If he'd taken them off there'd have been room for 2 more bikes wide in his bit of the road!

I never knew Tom's family he as far as I know was seperated and lived on his own. I met him thru a Fella's DIY shop in Whitehead and via BM mallusk where I PDI'd his 80th year special edition Black and white Roxster and met him shortly after he got His Tuono sporting and a few times since

You've probably all seen the news but the Police riders were badly bruised and our 2 lead bikes were also taken down and the riders shaken up. We're not really allowed to say anything as the ombudsman is to investigate

That'll probably be 2 years down the line and a million quid or more of our money wasted!

Basically bottom line is Tooooooooooooooo much Speed was involved and someone paid the price

So read the Road Folks and match your speed accordingly "Ride Safe!"

The Whole reason for the event

The Kids of the Northern Ireland Childrens Hospice being taken down from the Clarion Hotel to the Harbour escorted by the Police Riders

There were quite a few teary eyes in the carpark as they arrived

We were amazed to find one of our members kids was in there and he was out marsahlling and no one knew of his kids plight

In case anyone is interested in real time information rather than the rumour mill?

1/ There was more traffic than normal on the North Antrim Coast Road on Sunday 19th April mainly
because of the outstanding weather conditions, including the NI Children's Hospice Charity Motorcycle run......

2/ The police were at no point leading, marshalling, outriding or part of the QVMCC NI Children's Hospice
rideout organising, they were simply there on a "policing" capacity to ensure safety throughout the event,
which was very much appreciated by the club.

3/ The 2 fatalities in question on Sunday 19th April were 2 seperate incidents & in no way associated with the
QVMCC NI Children's Hospice Rideout members or participants.

4/ The second fatality involved a motorcyclist (Mr Tom Robinson) from Whitehead losing control of his motorcycle
whilst appraoching a corner along the Garron Road, which unfortunately occured as the QVMCC charity run was
approaching. 2 motorcycle officers were slightly injured during the incident.

5/ Quay Vipers motorcycle club operate a "static junction marshall" system, which does not interupt the flow of
traffic whatsoever, it's sole capacity is to inform participants on the event which direction to take should they fall
behind the main group.

This system has proven invaluable over the year's & has created an impeccable safety record throughout the clubs
runs & events. Club marshalls are not authorised to stop traffic at junctions or the likes & they don't unless authorised
to do so by the law; fortunately 99% of car drivers accept that any delay or inconvenience caused by the event is worth
the wait & kindly donate monies to the static junction marshall's for the children's Hospice event itself!

6/ In light of the unfortunate circumstances Quay Vipers Motorcycle Club organisers made a decision to discontinue the
run, instructing participants to either make their way home or go back to Carrickfergus rugby club where refreshments
& ballots were available. A large proportion of the event assembled at the rugby club afterwards to avail of the facilities provided.

7/ The PSNI officers, QV marshalls & paramedic motorcyle participants were exceptional in their handling of the entire incident,
there was minimal disruption to other road users at the front & rear of the event as all worked together extremely efficiently to
redirect traffic away from the scene via other costal routes in a very short space of time. Experience was definitely prevelant on
the day.......

8/ Media:- As with any news good or bad, the media/press glamorise or dramatise events on most occasions. Fortunately
on this occasion 99% of the prevailing bullitins, broadcasts or articles were accurate in the fact that they acknowledged that the accident/fatality was not related to the Charity run in any way.

Steve Nolan did have the topic of "recent motorcycle deaths" on his radio program on Monday morning, which obviously related to
the 2 incidents on Sunday 19th April. Several views were given by independant program listeners including the Garron road
incident, which at the end of the day is their "own personal opinion" on proceedings & is of no consequence or indeed relation
to the on-going investigations by the police ombudsman into the incident.

9/ At the end of the day, motorcyclists were out doing what they enjoy most of all......Travelling along one of the top ten
European listed biking roads in perfect weather conditions.
For all the bad press motorcyclist's recieve it has to be recognised that they are some of the most charitable people across
the world, organising & running events for those of us less fortunate.

Large organised motorcycle rideouts are not all bikers cup of tea because of the slower pace due to traffic volume but it
has to be said the main aim of such events is to "raise money for charity", have a good day out & get everyone home in the
safest possible manner.
Our charity events have never been a race & this has been proven by the exemplary safety record over the past 8 year's....

If this doesn't suit the individual riders needs then there are other means of testing your machines abilities, track days etc...

Some important facts have been clearly clarified by Tam's calculations as per previous thread.....
Quote:
Carrickfergus to Carnlough = 25.3 Miles
Bikes left Carrickfergus = 13:15
Accident time = 14:25
total driving time 1hr 10 mins
25 miles divided by 70 mins = 0.35
times 60 mins in hour to equal mph = 21.5 mph average for the journey.

Quay Vipers Motorcycle club will continue to support it's 3 major local charities & others in the same manor unless instructed otherwise.

We thank you for your continued participation & support of our events, your guestbook entries, forum threads & emails of
support are very much appreciated also.

I hope this clarifies some of the issues concerning Sunday 19th April 2009...

As already stated we express our sincere sympathies to Tom's (who was known to a few of us) Family & friends for their
loss & wish a speedy recovery to the injured PSNI motorcycle riders.

On behalf of QVMCC Northern Ireland.
