Hi Chaps,

Anyone wiser than me on here have any experience with running Gerbings finest heated jacket on a stock feeble weedy R 80 G/S charging circuit?

From what I can see the output of the G/S alternator is a stirring 280 watts (presumably at full rpm) and the jacket runs at about 88 watts. Am I wasting my time here, should I just man up and take it, or can I allow myself a modicum of comfort for these old bones?

Im not running any other electrical loads (ie heated grips or seats etc) but my feeling is that its all a bit marginal if I have lights on and am running around town at lower constant rpms etc.

Thoughts or experience welcome

i've run my EXO jacket + gloves with my G/S - no problems at all :)

Not an R80, but on the xCountry with 280w generator and FI and ABS, I have run 2x heated vests and heated grips and still seen over 13v on the dash (which actually under reads). When stopped this would drop to 12v though, so I did need to be moving along.

A steady pace is best. I found that acceleration increases the load more than cruising at that same speed.

i might add that i have one of them LED things that indicate voltage on my G/S, and in normal use with heated kit it's either green or off, which is good.

Many thanks gentleman.

I have now fitted my Gerbing harness and true to form it was actually a little to warm this afternoon to test it properly, but all seems good so far. Might even be tempted to get a pair of the heated gloves as well! Just in time for spring/summer!

Just had the same issue with my R80 Basic. Running Gerbing heated jacket and gloves, the LED controller kept indication low volts with both turned on. Switched the headlight from dip to park, and all was OK. I was actually heading over to see Gary at BaMW and mentioned the problem to him. He actually has high output rectifiers (I think he said rectifier) that the police used on the older GSs. So if all else fails give him a call.
