i am selling my v strom 650 and really thinking of turning german.. i like the old gs models becawse of the more off road abilities the carbs , lower weight and conventional fron suspension. Which of the two would you recomend? which is the most up to date considering brakes suspension snd stuff and finally wich had the less problems?? THANKS A LOT:rob

"more up to date, but when?"

HAhahaha.....

These bikes were up to date in the Eighties. Great fun now, but trying to decide between the 80 and 100 on the basis of "more up to date" would not seem possible, to me.

I recommend you try one as well as a newer GS before you decide.

R80

R80 would be the preferred engine.
R80G/S first, then R80 Basic, R80 Paralever and lastly any PD version for off road capability. The power issue is not a problem off-road and the R80 seems less likely to have Paralever shaft problems.
If you do want more power, the R80 can be upgraded with the Seibenrock kit to a less stressed 1000cc than the R100.

i have ridden the r80g/s (82') the 1100 (98) and the 1150 (00?) the 80 is surely not even close to the others for motorway use but off road and on twisty bad tarmac it is better plus it is lighter cheaper and far more good looking....:) but as i see in the tech specs the 100 is as heavy as the 1100 so is there any point to prefer the 100 over the 1100?

stick with the eighty unless you anticipate touring two up with luggage, then the extra grunt of the 100 makes for less work. 80 is a bit smoother too, otherwise they are the same bike.

r100gs

I have a 91' r100 gspd. It's really a great bike, has over 100,000 miles now.I have ridden both the 80 and the 100 and would recommend the r 100 gs.Having the extra 200 c.c.'s will handle two-up riding much easier.I still enjoy riding it even though it's very low tech.Something about the simplicity of the old thing that tickles me.
