R.I.D retrofit to 850GS

Thought I'd have a bit of that...............

Now I'm not really in favour of the latest TFT information displays as I felt I didn't really need all the extra complications, but I would like a clock and maybe the fuel gauge would be useful on longer trips (if we ever get them again!). I bought a RID unit and already had a new binnacle ready to go. I decided in the end to use my existing binnacle as it would save swapping everything else over.

I cut out a very neat hole (I impressed myself) for the RID and set about fitting it. Took off the screen and removed the binnacle from its mount all good so far, then realised that my existing binnacle was different. There were no mounting screw holes for the RID at all. My replacement binnacle does have the mounting holes, but before I start cutting that up as well I was wondering if everything else that I needed was there. Can anyone tell me where the female socket for the RID is located? I know it is on the frame under the front of the tank, but just in case there is nothing there on my bike, which side of the fame should it be on? Looking for something that isn't there is tricky if you don't know where it should be.

Any thoughts on whether because the bike doesn't have the right fitting that things like gear position switch will be there. Neutral light is obviously there, but not sure if that is based on the same switch.

What bike do you have, and what year ?

Assuming the wiring harness is the same across the range. There might be an 8 way grey coloured connector sat on you headstock. Accessed by removing the tank. If I recall from memory it’s likely to be on the right hand side.

If it’s not there, then you’re going to have to do some wiring mods.

The neutral switch and gear selector switch are two separate items on your bike, so you will need to buy the gear selector switch which comes with the cable harness attached. There should be a connector somewhere on the left hand side of the frame near the Alternator for it to plug into. If there is no plug then again you’re going to need to do some more wiring.

Good luck

Few weeks ago i took a RID of an 1100GS. Single plug. (I am keeping at the moment)
I did also find a you tube for installing a RID if it wasnt alreadybthere. Will search later.
Pretty sure it will be plug and play for any 1100GS or 850GS (and likely other models)

Hope it's dry this weekend

Hi Guys, thanks for your words of wisdom. I will check to see what is there now I know where to look.

Should have done that first time round, but as usual over confident!
