R.I.P. Tourances?

At the BMWMOA National, I was getting my tyres changed, and the salesman told me that Metzler was phasing out the standard Tourances in favour of Tourance EXPs. They have more contiguous tread blocks, and are biased a little more for the street. According to this fellow, the phaseout is because of the noisy cornering behaviour of the Tourances. FFS, if I wanted a street tyre, I'd buy Michelin Road Pilots.
Was this fellow just trying to sell me a set of EXPs, or is Metzler really getting rid of one of the best tyres they've ever made?
 
A real pity if they do, although I have noticed my front Tourance is more noisy when cornering than the tyre it replaced (also a Tourance but with cracked sidewalls - replaced under warranty by Metzeler).

I've heard it said that the Exp's don't have as good a wear rate as the ordinary Tourances.

Had to change my rear EXP after 4,000 miles changed it to old type much better,got over 7,000 on the last one before getting a puncture. I think its a money making exercise:augie
 
My last 2 pair of Tourance were not a patch on earlier ones,I felt they were more vibey and not so smooth running and I had several "moments" on them which reduced my faith in them,I switched to Continental and have tried the Road Attack and am currently on Trail Attack,normal service and levels of confidence have returned :clap I won't be going back to Metzeler any time soon so if they are dropped from the range I for one, won't lose too much sleep ;)

just got my old style tourances from the UK metzler importer, they are continuing distributing both old and exp as per the adv rider comment

Strage....rep at my garge told me the opposite. Getting rid of EXP's due to bad press.:confused:

It's only my behaviour on the corners we have to worry about not the Tourances;)
 
Tourances

I had Tourances on two previous GS's and they were fine; Now my new 2008 model has Bridgestone Battlewings; early days but they are smoother for low speed cornering - obligatory around here!
 
I phoned Pirelli a couple of months ago and they confirmed that there are no plans to phase out the 'old' Tourance.
 
I thought pirelli owned Metzler now, am I wrong :confused:

I wrote to Metzeler headquarters in Germany to get yet another point of view. Specifically I asked if the EXP will replace the standard Tourance, and when this will happen.

Quoting from their reply: "we can put you at ease. At this time there are no plans to stop production of the Metzeler Tourance."

For me that's sorted.

I appreciate the confirmation that Metzeler is not phasing out the Tourance (didn't check AdvRider, as the signal-to-noise ratio is too high there). Unfortunately, as was the case at the rally, if the various dealers aren't going to bring them in (which seems increasingly common), they will still be difficult to get. Which means that one will need to special order, usually (at least at my supplier's) at no discount.:eek:
Oh well, when I started motorcycling (in the mid-sixties:rob), bikes were a cheap and economical means of transportation. Hasn't been that way for a long time now.

I sent my Tourance EXP front and rears back to Pirelli/Metzler after getting only 4000miles out of front and rear. The front was badly worn on the sides. The grip was excellent in wet and dry. I would normally get 6/7000 miles out of a standard Tourance rear and approx 8/9000 out of the front. I have just recieved a credit note from them for 50% off my next set of tyres.
I am currently running Conti Trail attack and although the grip is good wet and dry, I feel that the front tyre is too reactive making low speed steering twitchy and dropping into corners to sharply. The wear rate seems excellent 4000miles and probably only half worn with no flattening.
When these wear out I shall be back to standard Tourance.

For 2008/09 the 150/70-17 H rated Tourance will be discontintued but the 150/70-17 V rated Tourance will continue as normal.


Hope this clears up all confusion.

....just got a repeat pescription..........3 bottles of red a week :)

That is because Pirelli do not make the Tourance tyre, cant phase out a tyre you dont produce.:blast:augie
....you've really got to do research before making those smart arse comments haven't you:thumb
