R Nine T issue, or is it just the way the “all” are?

I've had 1 x SC and 5 x TC's and none of them have had the problem you describe. They all (maybe twice a year) needed the old clutch out slightly to snick it into first gear when cold but that is quite common.

Stick to your guns, especially if their 'Master Technician' has confirmed a difficulty with it.

How long have you had the bike? Are you still in the rejection window? Which dealer?

Thank you for that info.

I agree, maybe once in the blue moon type situation, I will take that. When both service manager and master technician say there is a problem but trying to wriggle out of it, it makes me wonder.

The bike is BMW Dealer Ex Demo. First registered in May ‘17, decommissioned as Demo in August ‘17 and sold to us March 2018. So being low chassis with low seat option, not the easiest think to sell, so it sat there waiting. We had it now about 6-7 weeks. I left it be in the way that I was hoping it was just one off thing. Until we took a 140 mile round trip around Chiltern Hills area. And I would not hear the end of it in my intercom how “shit” this gearbox is!

How long is rejection window?

Could be air in the line, or a failing clutch master or slave ........... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...K21-BMW-R_nineT_16_0J01,_0J03_&diagId=21_0307

The mothership have been using that slave for quite a while, so seems strange to have a production issue they don't know about ..............then again, often in denial.

Has the dealer done a clutch fluid change? Some bikes have a habit of trapping air at the banjo unions at the top of the line, which need to be released & bled carefully.

I have suggested that there might be an airlock in the hydraulic system, but I will ask about that again when I next speak to them. Mind you, unless they have in the hissy fit had done a good deed and actually sorted the problem out.

Thank you.

To echo what others have said - had RnineT Scrambler and did 2,800 miles from new, and have RnineT Racer with 1,600 miles from new - never had any problem with gear selection on either (and the Racer is supposed to be worse because of the extended gear linkage).

Are you sure she hasn’t just picked up some of your bad habits? :D

Had a call again from dealer, very strange this whole thing.

They admit that bike has an issue, meanwhile saying that it isn’t a fault. Letting clutch slightly does let input shaft to line up with a “dog” whatever the hell that is (sounds to me that it is the root of the fault), alternatively “try rocking bike back and forth”, (you’d look like an idiot whilst doing that st the traffic lights) WTF? I replayed to that comment by saying, if I was to buy any BMW car from you and had trouble selecting 1st or reverse gear, would you expect me to get out the car and push it forward or backwards???!!! No surely not was his reply. My comment back was, then why would that be normal with the motorcycle? Wife already vertically challenged, inexperienced rider, on a new to her bike, who has now lost all of the confidence in this dealer as well as BMW brand.

Would anybody want to turn up tomorrow to back us up, Nutty, you in???? It only down the road from you?

Take it to another dealer for a second opinion

Initially smelt of BS, but thinking about it, sounds like an admission that there may be an issue with the dogs on first gear being able to mesh freely. That would need a gearbox internal examination unless it can be scoped. Suggest you keep the wife off it until sorted - mine is 5' 2'' & dropped hers both sides due to a clutch drag issue, before I even knew there was a problem.

The clutch itself is a simple affair TBH, single plate diaphram ........ http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...K21-BMW-R_nineT_16_0J01,_0J03_&diagId=21_0195

Have fun tomorrow. Check out the Motorrad website before you go. It covers their complaints pocedure. Keep it polite but firm; Ask to see the Dealer Principal to formalise your complaint if not 100% satisfied so you can escalate the issue through CS at Farnborough - please excuse me me if you are already up to speed in this respect.

Thank you for your suggestions and a tip-off.

My wife is 5’2” too. Last ride we done for the last two hours on the way home she did not go into neutral once till we got home. Trust me, it was a painful experience for both of us if you know what I mean.

PS: what would cause Dogs not meshing properly?
