My rear output seal has gone and leaking oil onto the rear tyre etc.
All that is no problem and I can easily whip out the gearbox and replace this and probably will do all the seals while it’s out.
My question if you all could help is - are any of the bearings susceptible to wear while I’m in there?
5th gear has had the circlip mod done and I will give that one a good check but anything else I should watch out for?
Much appreciated.

I’d replace the camplate springs / roller upgrade whilst in there,
I’d also replace the bearings and reshim as a matter of course( but that’s me😆)
Word of warning, the replacement para output shaft seals from some U.K. suppliers are shit.
I’d recommend getting the replacement seal from seibenrock,or at least check with your preferred supplier as to the source of the seal.

Edit,
The seals from motobins are of the correct spec,
I’ve just checked with them as I need one

Thanks Mikeyboy, some great advice. I’m in Spain so I’d want to try and either ship to a friend who can bring all the bits in his suitcase or worst case, one shipment.
Siebenrock would be a great option as Germany to Spain is no problem. Do they have all the other bit as well?
I usually just use Motorworks 🤷🏼‍♂️

Oh yes, I just looked and they have everything (of cause 🙄)
What’s the difference with the 2 complete 5spd gearbox bearing sets? Why is one so much more and which one is for me?
I don’t see the driveshaft stretch bolts but I will give them an email.
I also want a new left hand side switchgear as my indicator switch is a bit temperamental even after a good clean up!

Some gearbox bearing kits come without the front input shaft roller bearing which is quite expensive,
Are you sure both kits have all 6 bearings?
IIRC
The earlier post 81 twin/ mono shock only have a sealed bearing on one end of the Layshaft,( strangely with only one seal)
Para boxes have seals on both Layshaft bearings and also on the rear output.
I might have a used switch gear ,if your interested I can take a looksee

Ahh yes you are correct of cause, one of them doesn’t have that bearing!!!
I just got back to my desk in Iraq so I’ll have a proper look on the siebenrock website and stick an order together. I agree, while I’m in there it wants some bearings and spring kit pus that mod for the roller bearing for the shifter. It’s been more than 10 years since I was last in there.
How many times do you actually have to re shim when you check it? Is it unbelievably important 😏
Mine is a 1989 PD with a kickstart.

We reshim regardless of what’s been done
All parts ordered from Siebenrock and I have ordered the plate for the shim process plus a couple of each shim. New driveshaft bolts and a flange nut, all bearings and springs etc.
How many hours will it take me 🙂!
I’m only back for a couple of days at the end of the month.
Appreciate the help Mikeyboy!

Oh, I have one more question if it’s ok.
My bike has a Koso digital dash.
(The bike had been stood in the Dubai sun for 10 years and everything was a bit of a mess when I got it)
Anyway, the digital dash has the option to put a temp sensor on the gearbox and engine oil sump plugs.
I’m in Iraq and the bike is in Spain so I can’t pop out to check 🙂.
Does anyone know what thread size the engine oil and transmission oil drain plugs are?

Ok all sorted out I think. Bits ordered, bloody expensive seal replacement 😂.
Turned into all bearings, springs, seals, shims, bolts, measuring plate ++++++
Looking forward to doing the job. I’m only back with the bike for a day and a half so not sure I’ll get it all done but I want to get it stripped and checked for cog wear etc.
Maybe it’ll be ok. I’ve been in there before and have a decent idea. Body doesn’t need much sleep so could be done I suppose.
Hey, has anyone ever successfully retrofitted a fuel gauge?
KOSO sell a cable that fits directly into the Speedo drive at the back of the gearbox that I supposedly can take speed and RPM from so let’s see 🤷🏼‍♂️.

Mikeyboy, should I do the swing arm bearings and final drive bearing upgrade?
I’ll be taking them off anyway I guess, are they pretty straightforward?
I like the grease nipple idea but before I order just want to make sure it’s a good upgrade….

Think I’d take a view once the bike is stripped,
If it’s going to do big miles once it’s back together ,it’s probably a good preventative maintenance process.
If the bearings feel ok and it’s only for local stuff,re grease and refit.

Great, thanks for getting back to me.
For the sake of a £150 I think I’ll put them in new. I always end up with long rides and I don’t know if these have ever been done before. Motobins kit looks good for the final drive upgrade. I’m going to have to spend half the day cleaning all the oil from the output seal failure anyway I guess (well I might get the kids on that job…..) Appreciated!!
