Plus and minus for all options

BMW - they look the part; not sure if they are waterproof; complete the bike but don't have a lot of room

Soft - light weight, stop you from overloading the rear end and my personal choice

Ali - heavy [mine are 16kg empty!]; expensive; good for sitting on and as a prop for the bike. It has been suggested these are dangerous for trapping your leg(s) in an off; never tried it so don't know

Plastic - ie Hepco Becker; light weight, not particularly substantial but do the job, cheaper than most options

Most the time, it's a soft bag on the rear :D

Hope that helps

The OE ones do look the part. but it all depends what you want to use the bike for. Local or road trips int Europe I would stick with the OE. light enough to detatch and store or take up to a hotel room. Look good to and I found mine to be reasonably waterproof. Longer off road trips. Ally. bigger, stronger and can be used as a seat, table or anything else. If you drop the bike( slow speed) they stop it going all the way over. usually have to unbolt them so not so easy in hotels.
know naff all about soft ones except that I burnt a hole in mine on my CX.

OE (fitted with liners) plus 2 Ventura soft bags zipped together give me heaps of storage.

Don't get sucked into big increases in carrying capacity and therefore creating an unwieldly bike. Focus on carrying the minimum.

Put a security strap on OE panniers -some times they get bored and nick off

Horses for courses...
Standard ones for daily driving and metal ones for bigger trips.

I have Tesch panniers. Strong and I tested that.

I do like the idea and the look of these though: giantloop

John

Thanks for all the opinions, i generally stick to OE but the giantloop look excellent.
