went to start my r100gs 1988 model and it was just going click every time i press the button the battery is fully charged ... so i took the tank off and it was a relay under the tank that was making the clicking noise but now even that has stopped :blast so has anyone got any idea's what maybe the problem ..... thanks ..Davey

I have an old Valeo starter in bits, plus new brushgear (the plastic brushgear holder is very brittle, so be careful) if you want to try a repair. The old one came off my 1989 R100GS.

Otherwise its around £150 for a new one.

Whereabouts are you in Scotland ?

Bob.
Kirkliston (near Edinburgh, on the West side).

Check Motoworks, Motobins and Sherlocks. I got my recent one from Motobins, cos they were cheapest.
You are welcome to the spare one I have here tho. I changed it cos it was getting noisy but its ok and will get you away.

Exactly the same thing has happened on my 1988 100gs - new starter being fitted as I write.

Similar Problem

If mine (89 R100GS) has not been started in for a few days it makes that same clicking noise as well (like a little machine gun)http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/m16.gif when the ignition button is pressed. Normally the engine eventually turns over and then starts.

Is that the same problem and hence a weak or damaged starter motor? I wandered whether or not the battery was going?

£150 for a new starter motor on Motobins.

First thing to do is check the battery. Terminals tight? Levels topped up? And most importantly, is it charged up?
