Here and there, now and then.
I have decided to do a bit of a rolling restoration on my 42,000ml 1990 GS. I'm going to overhaul the top end next and was wondering whether to use genuine BMW valves etc; or buy a valve overhaul kit from MotoBins that is swiss made.
Does anyone have any advice on which to buy?

There's a much better option. Moorespeed make their own valves, lovely one piece that are a work of art, they also fit formula 1 technology valve guides. It was cheaper for this option than fitting inter valve when I had a pair of heads overhauled. Over 5k on then and they haven't needed any adjustment at all.

Hi Rob
thats
just what I was looking at doing as I have the motor on the bench.
can I ask what kind of price they charge .

I paid around £340 but went for the maximum oversize valve seats. Valves and guides. If you don't need the valve seats, which you shouldn't with you bikes engine, the cost will be considerably less. Prices are here http://www.moorespeed.co.uk/bmw-engine Richie turned the whole job around in a week.

I've just bought a pair of those. Seems a shame to put them inside the engine out of view.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to get OE stuff, the local bike shop reckon they can sort it out. I took the heads off today and then noticed oil had dripped from the large gaiter that connects the paralever/driveshaft to the gearbox, the gaiter is a little cracked in places, I know there's no oil in the driveshaft so I assume the oil is from the gearbox output bearing seal, it definitely smells like gear oil.
I think this may well be a good time to have all the splines lubed and even have the shaft drive overhauled while everything is apart. I might have a word with RGM for this part of the work as he's only about 30minutes away.
This rolling restoration mullarkey is going to cost a few bob, oh well 'in for a penny' and all that. Looks like I'll have to rename the bike the 'money pit' :(

I've got to ask. Why wouldn't you go for moorespeed valves? They're superb quality, don't have the weakness of oe valves, quickly available and cheaper than oe :nenau

Just curious. I'm surprised Richie didn't reply he's always been very quick to respond to my emails.

I'm just getting another cheque off to him for some more goodies. I figure this engine will stand me around £3k by the time it's done.

That's probably why he always answers your emails so quickly! :)

I'm building a special. There's no point going too quick with a gs, the upright riding position limits things and the braking gets a bit scary
