Hi Everyone,

The last few times I have been out on the bike (99 1100GS 35K) I have heard a death rattle coming from the R/H cylinder area. Owing to the Quirks of the boxer engine I ignored it until it became louder and had the occasional ting/clunk noise along with the rattle. I began to worry thinking words like 'cam chain tensioner' and 'elongated timing chain'. I had a look around on here for old threads and the Throttle bodies kept popping up. I have been and checked the butterflies on mine with the bike running on the stand and they are rattling with 2-4mm lateral play. So this is likely the cause.

Just to be safe I checked the valve and endfloat clearances, they were spot on. But when I was checking i noticed that the engine was fitted with the old 3 part pushrods:mmmm. I also Synced the TB's with my Carbtune, they were only slightly out.

I have two Questions,

1, Apart from the noise are rattly Throttle Bodies dangerous in any way? I can live with the noise until I can afford to get them repaired, but if they are going to jam open and put me under the back of a bus Im happy to dip into the overdraft:rolleyes:

2, Should I replace the 3 part pushrods without delay for the 'new type' one piece solid ones? Or are they OK to be left until they are noisy? (Whilst I was running the bike for syncing I checked the rocker covers for knocking, they were fine, no tapping at all from the rockers.)

Many Thanks in advance :beerjug:

Scriminger Engineering will refurbish your T/Bs for about £50 per side, or £150 ride in/out (+ the dreaded VAT). IMHO the refurbishment is a lot cheaper than new (or often secondhand) replacement and is a permanent fix. Steve is a brilliant engineer who certainly knows his BMWs.

Do a search for full details.

Hope this helps

Mike
