Started the engine on my number two R1100GS today which I bought about 6 months ago as a project. I've had all the frame parts powder-coated and given the bike a service.
After I'd started the engine, the RHS cylinderhead was 'knocking' quite loudly at tickover and just above, at 3K rpm, the noise disappeared totally.
My first thought was the rocker shaft endfloat was too great, even though I was certain I'd checked it.
After re-checking the endfloat and finding it set correctly, I removed the camshaft carrier and stripped it, I found slight wear to the cam lobes and extensive wear to the contact face on both followers.
First time I've seen wear like this on standard parts, 140K kms, regularly serviced.
Fortunately I've plenty of standard camshaft carriers and rocker arms to rebuild it with.
Steptoe, have you seen many with wear like this?
